Soft cover. Zustand: New. Myths and legends jostle with the contemporary in these stories where social issues of our times resonate with the inevitability of the past. The lyricism of Carnatic ragas permeate the pages of this quiet and powerful book in which love is rendered in all its immeasurable avatarsparental, carnal, platonic, romantic, divine. There is the woman who reinvents the notion of love in a unique way that amalgamates technology and spirituality through the Internet; a man full of love who can sing bulleh Shah and the woman who has lost her all in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots; the woman in the eponymous story who stands by her deaf daughter but understands why her husband must leave the home they have built with love all these years; the man who finds out what it is to be a woman after a dip in the pond. These short stories are shorn of sentimentality but have a deep understand-ing of what it means to live, to love and to die. Soft cover. Zustand: New. Revathi, an engineer, is besotted with Ravi, an auto driver, and marries him against her family s wishes. As her life unravels, we are brought face-to-face with the realities of narrow-minded, small lives, where it remains impossible for people to rise above the societal chains that shackle them. The novel explores one s helplessness and vulnerability in prose that is deceptively simple, it lays bare the insidious ways in which class, caste and misogyny infiltrate our lives and eat away at our humanity. Relentless and intense, most of the story unfurls in the hospital to which Revathi is brought as a burn victim. Her father, mother, brother and sister-in-law are in turns enraged, sorrowful, aggressive; her father carries around lakhs of rupees in the hope that he can use it for his daughter s treatment but is the money worthless now? Can it bring his daughter back to him? Imayam s is a voice to watch out for he writes with clinical precision, laying threadbare the hypocrisies of family life and the society at large in a manner that spares no one and offers little redemption.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Dalit literature is not just of the present, it is a literature of the future, one that forges it, rather than one that simply recounts the past, though its future emanates from its recounting and rebuttal of the past. Its politics informs its aesthetics part of its politics. It shows us how languages, indigenous state languages that people have given up thier lives for, languagethat gained states opposing various other linguistic hegemonies themselves, and write themselves are part of the oppressive structure. Thus, when Dalits 'write back' and write for themselves, and write themselves into the national space, they have to first fight the various languages that are given to them, they have to expose how the languages perform, force, their marginalisation. Dalit literature is thus complex and rewards close scrutiny and analysis. This volume tries to bring together different readings of Dalit literature. The selected essays, written over a peroid of a decade and a half of the 21st century, look at various issues- whether discrimination akin to that of the Dalit exists in other countries, how Dalits ahve been represented in English literature, how they have represented themselves in various literatures, theorising about Dalit writing, the problematics of translation, the wretched issue of caste based discrimination regardless of religion, the question of gender, and most persistently about language and power.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. "Hence the vanity of translation; it were as wise to cast a violet into a crucible that you might discover the formal principle of its colour and odour, as seek to transfuse from one language into another the creations of a poet. The plant must spring again from its seed, or it will bear no flower - and this is the burthen of the curse of Babel." (Shelley, A Defence of Poetry) Although Shelley may have considered the task of translating literature from one language to another as impossible (hence the image of the violets in a crucible), this volume argues otherwise. Looking at a variety of translations from and into different languages, across the ages and across continents (both eastwards and westwards), this collection insists not only on the necessity of translation, its potential for undoing the curse of Babel and opening doors to other cultures, but also on its potential to give rise to works which have their own literary or cultural merit. Zustand: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Seiten: 262 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | This volume explores how disability is seen, written about, read and understood through literature and translation. Foregrounding the asymmetrical world of power relations, it delves into the act of translation to exhibit how disability is constructed and deployed in language and culture. The essays in the volume reflect and theorise on experiences of translating various Indian-language stories (into English) which have disability as their subject. They focus on recovering and empowering marginal voices, as well as on the mechanics of translating idioms of disability. Furthermore, the book goes on to engage the reader to demonstrate how disability, and the space it occupies in our lives, can be reinforced or deconstructed in translation. A major intervention in translation and disability studies, this volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of literature, culture, and sociology.…
