Pacific Islanders make distinctions between themselves and others differently than Europeans and Americ…ans do. While Westerners tend to see ethnicity as a mat-ter of "blood" and ancestry, indigenous Pacific theories place more emphasis on environment, behavior, and performance. Nonetheless, colonization and the spread of Western political and social strategies have encouraged Islanders, like peoples elsewhere, to adopt the Western model?despite its foreign nature?when defining themselves as ethnic groups. Cultural Identity and Ethnicity in the Pacific contributes a cultural perspective to ongoing scholarly debates about the nature of ethnicity. The essays focus on symbols, meanings, and indigenous inter-pretations of cultural distinctiveness. By investigating the range of cultural identi-ties found in the modern Pacific, the authors raise provocative questions about the applicability of ethnicity as a scholarly concept. Although they do not all reach the same conclusions, all are committed to rethinking conventional assumptions about group identity. These thoughtful and imaginative essays address an idea of both theoretical and practical signifi-cance. They represent a contribution not only to Pacific studies but to anthropology and sociology as a whole.
