Light wear on tips. Fine in original slipcase, somewhat soiled and worn. The Sacred Mountain documents Events from Cheyenne oral traditions, ceremonial knowledge, warrior accounts, and family histories. Peter J. Powell (1928-2022) was an accomplished historian and scholar of the Plains Indians. According to the American Indian Health Service of Chicago, "on both the 1982 National Book Award in History and the Anisfield-Wolf Award in Race Relations. He began writing by kerosene lantern in Big Horn, WY, and finished both works at his scholarly home, the Newberry Library." He was President of the Foundation for the Preservation of American Indian Art and Culture, was a member of the Northern Cheyenne Chiefs Society since 1964, was also an adopted member of the Apsáalooke Tribe, the Adopted Son of the late Tom Yellowtail noted Apsáalooke Holy Man and Sundance priest and his wife Susie Yellowtail [The Brinton Museum].

[xl]; 683pp. [5].; [xiii]; 758pp. [pagination contiguous across both vols]. Both bindings bright and strong, with some light toning to the spines; internally clean, lavishly produced; in a clean strong slipcase with some loose threads in places and a little shelf soiling. A very good, clean copy indeed in its original slipcase. Father Powell is considered one of the leading historians of Native American peoples, founder of the St. Augustine Center for American Indians in Chicago, a researcher at the D'Arcy McNickle Center for American Indian History at the Newberry Library, and an Honorary Chief of the Northern Cheyenne Peoples. This mammoth work is essentially an historical biography of the Cheyenne over a critical 40 year period in the 19th century.
