The Lesser Antilles form a roughly homogeneous island complex located in the heart of the Caribbean province and recognized as a "hotspot" of biodiversity in the western Atlantic. With a total of more than a thousand species, the Decapod Crustaceans of the Lesser Antilles presents for the first time a documented inventory of shrimps, lobsters, hermit crabs and crabs of the region. It is based on bibliographic research in about 600 scientific contributions published over two centuries and integrates American, French, Dutch and Venezuelan research efforts. Some unpublished data from recent study missions in the French islands of Saint Martin, Guadeloupe and Martinique are also included. Readers will find an up-to-date list of species complying with the latest taxonomic revisions and the source of each report. A synthetic analysis of this list also proposes a history of harvests in the islands; a record of species by family, islands and archipelagos; the presentation of the main ecological niches; a zoological study that distinguishes marine and freshwater fauna; and prospects for discoveries of new species.
