This volume examines the legacy of Alexander the Macedonian as it survived and transformed itself in literature the arts and archaeology in Asia. The tendency to idealise Alexander began in antiquity and by the Roman period a body of romance had grown around him which continued to expand in almost every language from Scotland to Mongolia. The portrait of Alexander as the universal conqueror who was also the civiliser and benefactor of mankind owes its origin to Plutarch who wrote in the early centuries AD and has been extraordinarily potent in shaping modern views of Alexander. The legacy itself has been surprisingly tenacious and continued well into the present as it became the guiding star of nineteenth and twentieth century British archaeologists in the Indian subcontinent such as Alexander Cunningham John Marshall etc. in their search for cities established by Alexander and of the entire development of Gandharan art which was considered Buddhist in nature but Greek in form. The larger question that this book addresses is the creation of cultural memory and its persistence or appropriation through time as it establishes an almost parallel perspective on the past. The Book will be of interest to historians archaeologists art historians and all those interested in Alexander's journey through Asia. 264 pp.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The relationship between the Qajar rulers of Iran and the Vatican constitutes a little-known thread of diplomatic and cultural interaction, sustained by Papal correspondence, gift-giving, Apostolic Delegates and mutual respect, which spanned the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The well-being of Iran's small Catholic population was a desideratum of Popes, from Pius VII to Benedict XV, but firmans issued by Qajar Shahs offered guarantees which were often ignored on the ground. Iran's Catholics became unwitting pawns in the decades-long rivalry between American Presbyterians and French Lazarists, and nascent Iranian diplomacy in Europe took great care in matters concerning the Vatican.…

Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1999. XVIII,490 pp. Ills. Softcover. (Cambridge World Archaeology).Elam was an important state in southwestern Iran from the third millennium BC to the appearance of the Persian Empire and beyond. Less well-known than its neighbors in Mesopotamia, Anatolia, the Levant or Egypt, it was nonetheless a region of extraordinary cultural vitality. This book examines the formation and transformation of Elam's many identities through both archaeological and written evidence, and brings to life one of the most important regions of Western Asia, re-evaluates its significance, and places it in the context of the most recent archaeological and historical scholarship. The new edition includes material from over 800 additional sources, reflecting the enormous amount of fieldwork and scholarship on Iran since 1999. Every chapter contains new insights and material that have been seamlessly integrated into the text in order to give the reader an up-to-date understanding of ancient Elam. [Publisher].…
