Marcus Valerius Martialis (between 38 and 41 AD - between 102 and 104 AD) was a Roman poet born in Hispania. He is best known for his twelve books of Epigrams, published in Rome between AD 86 and 103. In these poems he satirises city life and the scandalous activities of his acquaintances, and romanticises his provincial upbringing. The present edition has been translated by J.A. Pott and F.A. Wright, and is part of the publisher's 'Broadway Translations' series. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with a white cloth spine and gold titling on a leather label on the spine. blue boards with black titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling to the boards and spine. The spine ends are bumped and there is some wear to the title label. The contents are tight and clean with a little scattered light foxing. There is no inscription. PLEASE NOTE: This is a fairly heavy book and extra postage may apply for delivery outside the UK.
