8vo. Together 4 pp. Interesting collection of letters, including one to the famous playwright and theatre director René-Charles Guilbert de Pixérécourt (1773-1844). In this somewhat cryptic letter, Potier informs Pixérécourt that he has delayed his departure indefinitely due to a conflict and alludes to Pixérécourt becoming mayor: "Mes adieux sont retardés indéfiniment je crains qu'on se batte en pays étranger nous pourrons remettre nos adieux plus tard il paraît certain que nous nous verrons demain et que vous m'avez bien l'air d'être bientôt notre maire c'est mon avis si toute fois cela ne vous contrarie pas trop on ne saurait faire un meilleur choix". In a postscript, he mentions that he suffers "like a demon" and has no appetite: "Je souffre comme un démon de mes douleurs. Je ne mange pas du tout. J'attendrai pour vous demander la soupe que mon appétit soit revenu". - In a letter dated only 21 November, Potier informs the secretary of the Paris Conservatory, Alfred de Beauchesne (1827-70), that his protégé, a Miss Henriette Gompertz, has to interrupt her studies due to an illness and asks him to keep her place: "Permettez-moi de vous importuner pour vous prier d'excuser ma protégée, M.lle Henriette Gompertz qui est, ainsi que le prouve le certificat de son médecin, assez indisposée pour être obligé de suspendre ses études et cela à son grand regret. Veuillez, lorsqu'elle résoudra, lui continuer l'intérêt que j'ai sollicité de votre part en sa faveur et lui conserver sa place [.]". - The final letter in the collection is addressed to the theatre director Anténor Joly (1799-1852). Poitier originally enclosed the end of a manuscript of memoires that involved the playwright Aristide Letorzec, known as Lajariette. Potier also mentions that he missed an engagement in a vaudeville play in order to finish Joly's "business", thus asking him for 100 francs that he would use to pay for his granddaughter's wet nurse: "Je vous envoie la fin des mémoires. Lajariette ne l'a pas encore revue. Si vous voulez les lui renvoyer pour qu'il les complette [!] vous le pouvez mais les petits détails d'intérieure gagnent peut-être à être faite par moi. Voyez, agissez comme bon vous semblera. J'ai une soif ardente d'argent. J'ai négligé pour terminer votre affaire un petit vaudeville avec [.] et les cent francs que je vous demande me rendraient service. J'ai une jolie petite fille qui m'en prendra d'abord 50 pour sa nourrice. Quoique gagnant assez d'argent j'ai tant de choses à faire autour de moi que je suis toujours court [.]". No memoirs are known to have been published by Potier, Joly, or Lajariette. - Occasional minor stains.

An extensive miscellany gathering texts, some original, some copied or translated, concerning French military campaigns of the decades prior to 1860, especially in Russia, including the Napoleonic campaigns (the Battles of Smolensk and Moscow and the retreat from Moscow) and the French involvement in the Crimea (including the Siege of Sebastopol). The extracts include an almost hagiographical biography of Napoleon's aide de campe, General Drouot (1774-1847); translated passages from Louis Oliphant's Russian Shores of the Black Sea (1853) concerning Balaclava and Sebastopol; descriptions of Nicolaieff, Kerson Bay and Perekop and an account of an excursion in the North African desert. The last few pages of this last text have been carefully excised, and an explanation in another nineteenth-century hand to the following leaf explains: 'Les pages qui manquent, peut-être un peu légères, ont sans doute ete arachées par le B[ar]on de Potier leur transcripteur, après qu'il fut tombé dans la haute dévotion.'
