The Portico Library was established in 1806 by 400 subscribers all men until the Married Women's Property Act of 1870 allowed for the provision of female members. A very good plus copy and rare. The Library Hub Discover ( on - line 5 / 22 ) locates only one copy - Chetham's Library , Manchester. The first volume of the Portico Library Catalogue was published in 1856 , William Axon in his - Handbook of the Public Librariesof Manchester and Salford. Manchester. 1877, page 14, comments on the catalogue - ' It would be an ungracious task to point out the errors which may be noticed in it, especially as on the whole they are not of a character to detract greatly from its usefulness '.
