Hard Cover. Zustand: Fair. No Jacket. Rebound in modern light brown cloth with gilt bands on the spine. 376 pages. With a large colored, fold out map depicting the retreat of the French Army from Moscow, as well as portrait of Prince Koutousoff attached to the front pastedown endpaper. Collated with text complete, although perhaps lacking the half title and a blank endpaper. LACKING one map. The half title may be on the reverse of the portrait. A detailed account of Napoleon's attempted conquest of Russia, ultimately unsuccessful, and resulting in a retreat that decimated much of his army. This includes Napoleon's occupation of Moscow and Russia's refusal to surrender, detailing Napoleon's failed attempt at burning the Kremlin, as well as Russian forces retaking of Moscow. FAIR/GOOD condition. Light fading and soiling to the covers. The interior is solid, with a few new endpapers present, of thicker paper stock. Some chipping and minor loss to the title page and contents page along the extremities, with no loss of text. The original text block appears to have cracked in the gutter at the contents page, but is solid and intact. Heavy browning to the paper, with scattered soiling. Heavy browning/staining to the upper 1/3 of the pages of the first half of the book. Page edges soiled. Several ownership signatures in pencil present. The map is backed with white cloth, with several tears evident along the folds. Moderate browning to the map, with scattered foxing, soiling and a few small stains.

Leather. Zustand: Very Good. First edition. The first edition of this uncommon work regarding travels in Portugal and Spain during the Peninsula War. Written by Sir Robert Ker Porter, a Scottish artist, diplomat and traveller. Porter is noted for his accounts of times in Russia, Spain and Persia. He was also one of the earliest panorama painters in Britain. This work is based on letters written by Sir Robert Ker Porter on his travels under General Sir John Moore. Moore and Porter met in Sweden where Porter decided to accompany Moore on his military expedition. Porter was therefore present at the Battle of Coruna, and the death of the general. These letters give a detailed account of this battle. Illustrated with six plates. Collated, complete. To the preface Porter notes that these letters were 'written on the spot, and immediately as the events arose, of which they are the subjects'. A key first-hand account regarding the state of Portugal and Spain during the Napoleonic Wars. In a contemporary tree calf binding. Rebacked with the original spine label laid down. Chip to the frontispiece at the edges. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with just the odd scattered spots. Very Good. None (illustrator). book.
