He career brought him into the service of both papal legates and the ducal Hapsburg family, which then ruled Austria and Strasbourg. This composition, to Sigismund Hapsburg, was composed in 1443, when Aeneas was employed as a secretary for the Imperial chancellery. He appears to be extolling the values of education on the young duke, persuading him the teenage duke to pursue the arts and literature as a way of enriching his mind and political clout as a ruler. In coming years this relationship would boil over with Aeneas' elevation to the Papal office and the dispute with Sigismund over episcopal appointments. …

Small 4to (150 x 215 mm). (46) pp., final blank leaf. Gothic type with capital spaces. Bound in 19th century green half vellum over marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt. Scarce incunable edition of three works by Enea Silvio Piccolomini (1405-1464), the renowned Renaissance humanist and poet who became Pope Pius II in 1458. The book opens with his famous "De duobus amantibus" ("Tale of two lovers"), one of the earliest epistolary novels, full of erotic imagery, and (unsurprisingly) a fifteenth-century bestseller. Composed in 1444, it is a story of illicit love between Lucretia, a young, cultured, and unhappily married Italian lady in Siena, and Euryalus, a courtier to the Duke of Austria. This is followed by the "De remedio amoris", a letter addressed by Piccolomini to his friend Ippolito, who had fallen in love with a prostitute; and the volume ends with his "Epistola retractatoria", written after he had become Pope, encouraging readers to ignore his "youthful" amorous outpourings (in fact, Piccolomini he was almost forty when he wrote "De duobus amantibus") and to pay heed instead to his papal pronouncements. - Konrad Kachelofen (ca. 1450 - ca. 1529) began his career trading in paper, groceries, and wine, but rose to become the most significant printer in fifteenth-century Leipzig. This was his only edition of Piccolomini. - Binding shows some rubbing to extremities and covers. Title-page and final blank dusty, some light marginal foxing, a few small wormholes, small hole to A6 touching a couple of letters; still very good in all. - Ownership inscription "A. H. Contemporary limp vellum decorated in blind, yapp fore-edges (dust-soiled). Provenance: Some contemporary marginal annotations; ownership inscription and notes of Dr. David Laird, M.D. on the front paste-down. Pope Pius II (1458-1464) travelled widely and was a prolific writer; two incomplete editions of his work were published by Henrich Petri in 1551 and this edition in 1571 which includes accounts of his many travels and in particular his secret mission to Scotland with Cardinal Albergati "The voyage was very tempestuous and Piccolomini vowed to walk, if spared, barefoot from the port of arrival to the nearest shrine of Our Lady. He landed at Dunbar and, from the pilgrimage of ten miles through ice and snow to the sanctuary of Whitekirk, he contracted the gout from which he suffered for the rest of his life" (Catholic Encyclopedia).Two of his most important works were either entirely or partly written during his period as Pope: "his geographical and ethnographical description of Asia and Europe; and his "Memoirs", which are the only autobiography left us by a pope. They are entitled "Pii II Commentarii rerum memorabilium, quae temporibus suis contigerunt". Earlier in his life he had written, besides "Eurialus and Lucretia" and the recently discovered comedy "Chrysis", the followinghistorical works: "Libellus dialogorum de generalis concilii auctoritate et gestis Basileensium"; "Commentarius de rebus Basileae gestis"; "Historia rerum Frederici III imperatoris"; "Historia Bohemica" (Catholic Encyclopedia).
