Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Second Council of the Lateran was the tenth ecumenical council recognized by the Catholic Church. It was convened by Pope Innocent II in April 1139 and attended by close to a thousand clerics. Its immediate task was to neutralize the after-effects of the schism which had arisen after the death of Pope Honorius II in 1130 and the papal election that year that established Pietro Pierleoni as the antipope Anacletus II.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Ex commisso nobis was a papal bull issued on July 7, 1136 by Pope Innocent II in Pisa. His election six years earlier prompted a schism in the Western Church. The Polish church supported the appointment of the Antipope Anacletus II, while St. Norbert, Archbishop of Magdeburg, remained faithful to Innocent. In August 1135, in exchange for the independence of the Polish bishops, Boleslaw III Wrymouth, Duke of Poland, declared himself a vassal of Emperor Lothair and agreed to pay tribute to the Imperial Curia. On July 7, 1136, Pope Innocent upheld the independence of the Polish church from the German Archdiocese of Magdeburg via the Bishopric of Gniezno.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Cunigunde of Luxemburg, Holy Roman Empress, Queen of Germany, and Nun, was canonized by Pope Innocent III in Rome on March 29th, 1200, 53 years after the canonization of her husband, the Emperor Henry II. To prepare a case for canonization her biography was compiled by Papal authorities looking to clarify the sentinel events of her life. This is the Papal bull for her canonization, which states several instances of supernatural occurrences and miracles which are said to be directly related to the intervention of the Empress.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In these letters to the Maronite bishops, Pope Innocent III and Innocent IV emphasizes the importance of unity within the Catholic Church, urging the bishops to recognize the Pope as the Vicar of Christ and to adhere to Roman doctrines. The Pope recalls a prior commitment made by the Maronite leaders to uphold obedience to the Apostolic See. He outlines specific liturgical practices and beliefs that must be observed, including the proper understanding of the Holy Spirit's procession, baptismal rites, and the administration of sacraments. The letter concludes with a promise of protection from the Pope and a directive to align more closely with Roman customs.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. INNOCENTIUS III, Pope (Busche, Hermann von dem, Ed.) Fundamentum eterne felicitatis Cum libro de Miseria conditionis humane. Köln, per Matinum de werdena, 1509. 8vo, unnumbered leaves, A-F8 G4 H8. Black letter, 32 lines. Large woodcut vignette on title page repeated on verso of last: Jesus as a child between Saint Anne and Mary in the presence of the dove of the Holy Spirit. Capital spaces with small guide-letters, printed maniculae indicating the heading of each paragraph. Small paper repair to outer margin of t-p and metal clip to margin of D6 bookmarking the table of contents. Evenly soiled, yet lightly, and a little darkened to margin edges. In modern gilt red morocco, title and date on front cover and spine. An excellent copy. Pope Innocent III (1160-1216), alias Loatrio di Segni, studied at the universities of Paris and Bologna. This very learned man of austere manners first became cardinal in 1190 and then pope as the successor of Celestine III. He fostered the moral and disciplinary reform of the Church, the fight against heresy, and the re-conquest of the Holy Land. He promoted the fourth crusade, which diverted from its original aim and concluded with the sack of Constantinople in 1204. He undertook the Albigesian crusade in order to supress the Cathar heresy, which had spread to large areas of the Pyrenees, Southern France and Northern Italy. Moreover, he crowned the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II in 1212. Even though he was a skilled politician, he was moved by deeply religious purposes. Innocent wrote several theological and ascetic treatises, of which De miseria humane conditionis was the most renown, especially following his rule, when it was known with the title De contemptu mundi. This pope resumed the theocratic ideas of Gregory VII, according to which the pope is the vicar of Christ and the king of all kings; as spiritual power is superior to secular power, so the human soul rules over the body and the sun over the moon; both the spiritual and the secular swords are of the pope, who nevertheless concedes that the emperor uses one of the two, since the latter is advocatus Ecclesiae. Given that the pope must look after and take care of all men, by cause of the perpetual sinful condition of humanity, he has the power of control over everything and, therefore, he is legitimated to intervene in every field directly by God. The editor of the present work was Hermann von dem Busche (1468-1534), a German humanist who studied in Heidelberg, Tubingen and Italy. He is given as one of the authors of the Epistolae obscurorum virorum. He was a close friend to Ulrich von Hutten and an early enthusiast of the Reformation.…

In den WarenkorbSingle sheet (44 x 59 cm). Latin manuscript on vellum, written in littera documentaria pontificalis with decorative elaboration of ascenders and descenders, opening in laterally compressed minuscules, decorated initial C. With rota including autograph device of Innocent II and "Bene Valete" mongram. Archival inscriptions on dorse. Cords from seal partially preserved. One current and three future Popes attest a document during one of the most turbulent periods in the ascent of the medieval papal monarchy: Innocent II confirms the possessions of the Church of St Floridus in Città di Castello, Umbria, in an original bull of 1141, hitherto unknown except by later transcriptions. In his own hand, the Pope adds his personal device to the outer ring of the rota next to what is probably an autograph subscription. The following signatures from members of the College of Cardinals include the autographs of the future Popes Celestine II, Lucius II, and Anastasius IV, making this well-preserved document an imposing expression of the authority of the Catholic Church at the height of the Middle Ages. - At the request of Cardinal Guido di Castello (later Pope Celestine II, a native of the city but not to be confused with Bishop Guido, who died in 1137 or 1142), the Pope addresses Provost Gerard (in office 1116-43) of the Canons of the Church of St Floridus in Città di Castello, confirming the inviolability of its possessions by any figure, ecclesiastical or secular, in perpetuity, on pain of excommunication. The medieval archival inscription on the dorse describes this as a grant of immunity. - Under Innocent II (r. 1130-43), the Papal Chancery reached a pinnacle of elegance and standardisation in the layout of documents. The opening protocol is written in laterally compressed minuscules, the rest of document in a fine Papal Documentary hand. Following the triple "Amen" closing the main text (spaced out over the final line, an authenticating device to ensure that extra text could not be added retroactively), we have the rota: a cross in two circles with the names of St Peter, St Paul, and Innocent II. In the outer ring, the Pope adds his personal device ("adiuua nos deus salutaris noster") in his own hand. Next to this is his subscription, here with elongated ascenders ("ego Innocentius catholice eccl[esi]e ep[iscopu]s s[ub]s[scripsi]"). The distinctive shape of the letter s, with a slightly elongated, slanting tail, also seen in the device in the rota, suggests that the papal subscription is wholly autograph. Bracketing it to the other side is a superbly executed "Bene Valete" monogram. - The witness-list from members of the College of Cardinals consists of individuals attested from other diplomas of Innocent II, including three future popes: Guido of Castello, Innocent's immediate successor as Celestine II (r. 1143-44); Gerhard, Priest of the Church of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem, who in turn succeeded him as Lucius II (r. 1144-45); and Conrad, Bishop of Sabina, later Anastasius IV (r. 1153-54). As Cardinals were chosen for their learning, ability to write carried a social cachet, and the individuality of the hands suggests that they are also all autograph subscriptions. - The signing chancery official (sometimes but not always identical with the scribe) is Aimeric, the powerful Chancellor who was instrumental in Innocent's disputed election in 1130, which precipitated a schism in the Papacy betwen him and the Antipope Anacletus II. With Anacletus' faction stronger in Rome, Innocent fled to France, where the support of Bernard of Clairvaux ensured him a favourable reception. In 1132, the Holy Roman Emperor Lothar III took up Innocent's cause, and received in return his imperial coronation from him. Nonetheless, the schism had political consequences throughout Europe, and was not truly resolved until the death of Anacletus in 1138. - This bull from 1141 attests to the period of consolidation of papal power and the rewarding of Innocent's sup. …

In den WarenkorbExtremely rare first and only edition of Lauro's Italian translation of De miseria condicionis humanae (on the wretchedness of the human condition), also known as Liber de contemptu mundi, a very popular and influential 12th-century religious text on ascetism. The present copy has been beautifully bound by the famous bindery of French bookbinders Alain Lobstein and Jean-Paul Laurenchet. We have not been able to trace any other copies of the present edition in sales records, and only 7 in institutions (4 in Italy, 2 in the US, and 1 in Canada). The text is divided into three parts. The first describes the wretchedness of the human body and the various hardships one has to bear throughout life; the second part lists man's futile ambitions, pleasure, and esteem; and the third part deals with the decay of the human corpse, the anguish of the damned in hell, and the Day of Judgment. The work was written by Lothario dei Conti di Segni (1161-1216), the later Pope Innocent III, and was widely disseminated and quoted in the medieval period. Nearly 700 manuscript copies of it are known, and it was first printed in Strasbourg in ca. 1472. The first Italian translation appeared in 1515, and was made by Agostino da Colonna. Modern editions and translations in English were published in 1955, 1969 and 1978.The present Italian translation, which was only the second, was made by Pietro Lauro from Modena (1508-1568), a poet, scholar and translator of many Latin, Greek and Spanish works in the service of the great Venetian publishers of his time, including Valgris and Giolito. Among his translations are several works by Erasmus, Leon Battista Alberti, Columella, Hippocrates, and many others. The influence the work has had on later books on asceticism, by for example Christine de Pizan, St. Bernardine of Sienna, Chaucer (Of the wreched engendrynge), Erasmus (De comtemptu mundi), Thomas Mann (The magic mountain) and many others, is paramount. It has even had a clear impact on modern works, such as Godard's film Le Mépris. With the stamp of the French bindery Lobstein-Laurenchet on the front pastedown. The corners of the boards are very slightly scuffed. The work is lightly browned and foxed throughout, a small wormhole in the title page, without affecting any text, the head margin has been cut somewhat short, also without affecting any text. Otherwise in very good condition.l Diz. Biogr. degli Italiani, 64; Edit 16 CNCE 54146; OPAC SBN UM1E017796 (3 copies in Italian libraries); USTC 803031 (3 copies); WorldCat 8455093, 78748459 (3 copies); cf. Kelly, W. In den Warenkorb206 x 293 mm. (8 1/8 x 11 1/2"). 12 lines in a papal documentary script. Attractively framed. Lead bulla suspended on silk threads. Very light rubbing to ink in places, one horizontal and three vertical creases (each with a tiny hole where the folds meet), lead seal showing a bit of wear around edges and to protuberances of the faces, but these faults all quite minor, and on the whole an excellent specimen. Beautifully preserved and with the original lead bulla still attached, this document, issued by one of the most powerful popes of the Middle Ages, resolves a dispute between the monastery attached to the Lateran Palace and the priory of Santi Quattro Coronati (Four Holy Martyrs). The two groups seem to have been in conflict over their respective parish boundaries and the inclusion or exclusion of certain churches (and therefore the tithes and legal dues stemming from those churches) within their particular networks of influence. According to this bull, the cardinal priest of Sts. Peter and Paul was charged with hearing their petitions; based on his report, Pope Innocent III decrees that the boundaries of the priory's parish will extend to the church of St. Nicholas "de formis" on one side, and the arch of John the Baptist "intra formis" on the other side (with "de formis" and "intra formis" possibly referring to their relative position to certain aqueducts in the city). The document also notes that it does not alter parish boundaries as formerly defined by Pope Calixtus II (r. 1119-24). The present item falls into a category of papal documents known as "litterae solemnes" (comprising solemn letters and simple privileges). Though somewhat shorter and less formal than the so-called "Great Bulls," which were very large and included many marks and signatures for authentication, "litterae solemnes" still followed strict rules in terms of format and appearance, and included a lead seal displaying the pope's name on one side, and the visages of Sts. Peter and Paul on the other, as here. (For a full overview of papal bulls and their various formats, see Clemens & Graham, "Introduction to Manuscript Studies," pp. 230-36). Innocent III (born Lotario dei Conti di Segni, 1160 or 1161-1216) was considered the most powerful person in Europe during his reign (1198-1216), having done much to consolidate the power of the Holy See and exert influence over the affairs of nations near and far. Notably, he proclaimed the supremacy of the church over secular authority, launched the Fourth Crusade (which ended in the sacking of Constantinople), presided over the Fourth Lateran Council, excommunicated King John of England and nullified the Magna Carta, and vigorously suppressed heretical sects such as the Cathars. Papal bulls issued by Innocent III seem to be of the utmost rarity on the market; we could find just one other example recorded by ABPC and RBH as sold in the past 100 years, going for a hammer price of 9,000 ($10,999) in 2013.…
