The first volume of Pope Benedict XIV' most renowned work - De Synodo Dioecesana, which has been called 'the best work on diocesan synods' [Catholic Encyclopaedia]. De Synodo Dioecesana, a classic work, first published in 1748 after Lambertini's elevation to the papacy, is an adaptation, to diocesan administration, of general ecclesiastical law. Augustin Joseph Schulte in the Catholic Encyclopaedia called it 'one of the most important, if not the most important, modern work on canon law' 1100 grams.

Printed in two colums. Bound in contemporary full red morocco, both covers with floral gilt decoration, gilt decorated spine. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Binding with some traces of use, especially at the extremities (lower corners), inside a clean copy with large lower margins. No provenance markings.

BINDING : Full green morocco, raised spine with gilt title and ornamentation, both covers decorated with large gilt decoration and lettering, consisting of a quote from the New Testament (John 4.14 - Jesus to the Samaritan) '' SED AQUA QUAM EGO.). 8 gilt brass corners i and two large gilt brass clasps. All edges gilt. With green and red leather tabs ( all present, undamaged) and a silk 6 fold bookmark. Some light use at the canon page but a missal in fine condition with hardly any traces of use, The green colour is unusual for a missal binding. Allmost all missals are bound in black or red leather. (Binding signed Drey [?] on the back cover.).The missal was composed to be serving in the diocese of Münster (Germany). The missal, always in Latin, was the most important book in the Roman catholic liturgy and served during mass (Eucharist celebration). It was made universal for the Church at the Council of Trent (1545-1563) and virtually made redundant at the Second Vatican Council in the 1960's. Finely preserved missal in a spectacular and highly unusual binding.

Ratisbonae ( Regensburg ), Sumtibus, chartis et typis Friderici Pustet, 1863, in-folio, 40 x 26,5 cm, (34) nn pp (with chromolithograpic title; typographical title, calender.) + 548 pp (with several full page steel engraved plates ) + (179) pp + (1)nn pp ((ad Lectori) + xlviii pp (appendix missarum) + 16 pp (Missae Proproae Sanctorum.Dioecesis Leodiensis). The last part (16pp) is printed in the same typography by the Mechlin publisher-printer Dessain and indicates that the missal was intended for use in the Diocese of Liège (Southern Belgium). All pages printed in red and black with intricate typographical border. Printed in two columns, with numerous picturial initioals. , . BINDING : Full red-brown morocco, smooth spine with engraved silver title., both covers decrated with important silver decoration: frontcover ''the last supper'' ; backcover ''nativity scene'', two working silver clasps ; corners with large silver triangle protections (9cm). All silver decorations with the silver marking ''J)(D'' (unidentified, probably Liège) All edges gilt. With end papers in red colored silk. Fine silver binding in fine condition with hardly any traces of use,(the outer joints are expertly restored). Interior fine and without stains or foxing. which is rare because these missals were in daily use during mass service in the Roman Catholic church. Engraved frontispice ( ex typographia Vaticana) + (4)nn pp (typograpical title; index, engraved plate) + 176 pp. With 16 full page engravings; 21 engraved vignets; 3 engraved pictural borders and 16 engraved initials, many pages with music scores (6 staves per page). Entirely printed in red & black and in two comums within a double typographical border. The canon plate is an engraving by Aloysius Gomier after a design of Hannibale Caracci. Binding: Bound in contemporary full red morocco. Front and back cover with a rich gilt decoration: a broad (2 cm) floral border; a central supra libro within a quadrangle consisting of a similar broad floral border.All edges gilt. Double fillets on the board edges. Decorated spine with green leather title label. Most probably a Fren,ch binding. We could not identify the owner. Description of the supra libro (in French) ''Chevron d'or chargé d'une étoile en chef et accompagné de trois coquilles, l'écu sommé de la mitre et posé sur deux crosses passées en sautoir, dimension 83 x 64 mm. (shield of a bishop or abbott). Binding is in good order but shows some scratches and minimal wear at the extremities (no loss of leather). The interior comes with some scattered small stains; the first 50 pp. have (mainly marginal) faint foxing spots. On the whole still a fine/good copy. Rare liturgical book for the Roman Catholic rite, destined for its highplaced clergy, as explicitly mentioned in the title. The quality of the typography, illustration and binding emphazise the book's importance.
