The increasing complexity of communication systems, both by themselves and in land-based or satellite networks, has created a greater need for finding use ful mathematical techniques for their analysis. The rapidly evolving technolo gies involved continue to find exciting new areas for application, and it remains a challenge for researchers to keep abreast of developments. In this volume researchers from a broad cross section of the areas of communications, signal processing, and computer networks have been invited to contribute articles to assist readers in learning about the current state of research and future research directions in their area. Vol. II concludes with 'Process of making bread with all the bran added.', a four-page pamphlet with 'S' in the direction-line on p.1, which was probably intended for issue with this volume. One gathering in Vol. I heavily foxed, otherwise in good clean condition, some browning to e.ps & pastedowns. Contemporary half sprinkled calf, gilt banded spines, red & dark green gilt morocco labels, marbled boards. Ownership name of Henry Wastell, 1800 at head of each titlepage - possibly Henry Wastell, surgeon, a member of the Medical Society of London. v.g. ESTC N55144, 5 copies in the UK; 4 copies in North America, 1 in Germany; ESTC T218747, 6 copies in the UK; 1 copy in America, 1 in Germany. The reports were edited by Sir Thomas Bernard, 1750-1818, one of the originators of the cooperative movement in England, and a noted philanthropist who, with Wilberforce and others, founded in 1796 the Society for Bettering the Condition and increasing the Comforts of the Poor. Among the immediate results of his recommendations was the formation, in 1800, of a school for the indigent blind, and in 1801 of the Fever Institution. He also promoted vaccination, and campaigned for protecting children in cotton mills and as the apprentices of chimney-sweeps. The reports were first issued in separate, and slightly larger format, 1798-1814, and also in this slightly smaller sized 'second edition', which according to a footnote in the preface appear to contain some updated information since their first printing. …

The object of the Society, established in 1811 was "to instruct the Children of the Poor in suitable learning, works of industry and the principles of Christian religion according to the Established Church." Apart from building and supporting schools throughout the country, the Society also maintained a central school in London where "the system of mutual tuition is in actual operation on a large scale and where a number of adult Teachers, both male and female, are practically instructed in the method of applying that system." The pamphlet prints a financial report, list of subscriptions and a report on the progress of the Society. The society and its training school predated any of the British education acts.…

A book produced to raise donations for the Eventide Relief Fund in the wake of the horrific May 20, 1980 fire, which tore through a building on the campus, killing 157 people. The Eventide Home Institution was established in 1870 as a home for elderly women, though it would eventually open its doors to the destitude, crippled, and severely handicapped children and men of the island. The home was perpetually underfunded and overcrowded, with several buildings condemned repeatedly, and described as "a tinderbox." Following an introduction by David Johnson, the contents are largely dedicated to stark black & white photographs (all captioned) of the various types of residents the institution cares for, virtually all in an exceedingly deplorable state. With the proceeds the Mayor and aldermen of the City of Lincoln were to buy an estate in Bardney, seven miles from Lincoln, and with the residue purchase other lands near Lincoln from which the poor in the two parishes of St. Swithin and Eastgate will benefit by fifty pounds a year. The introduction of the enclosure act had a damming effect on the lower classes, as the author of this pamphlet implies: "to increase the estates of the great proprietor and the church, leaving the poor man even without the 'common right' for his cow, or the few yards of ground whereon to grow his vegetables, which had previously afforded him the means of rearing his little family". He then sets out to illustrate the example been carried out by Richard Westbrook Baker on the estates of Sir Gerard Noel Noel in Rutland. Here Baker had formed 'The County of Rutland General Friendly Institution' with an aim to ameliorate the condition of the poor, by means of the small allotment system, child education, and the benefit of the Stamford and Rutland Infirmary. Neatly pasted onto a sheet of thicker paper (slightly crumpled in places and with old neat fold lines).   [London: no printer's name given,  A handbill advertising a series of "instructive" lectures on various subjects for the very poorest people living in London in the middle of the 19th-century.   The lecture subjects include chemistry, phrenology, astronomy, geology and physiology. The lecture on "The South Sea Islands" was delivered on February 8th 1853 by Samuel Tamatoa Williams (1826-1906) who was born in the Leeward Islands to the missionaries John and Mary Williams, Samuel returned to England in 1833 with his parents (and a native of Samoa named Leota) but his father returned to the Polynesian Islands in 1837 and was killed and eaten by cannibals in the New Hebrides in 1839.   The introduction to the lectures is delivered in the typical language of the missionary societies with the intended audience told, "The lectures are arranged to take place once a fortnight, so as not to occupy too much of your time, and it will depend on you if they shall be continued on succeeding years.Read attentively the list below, and resolve that you will, even if it cost you a little trouble, BE PRESENT AT THEM ALL, and believe us you will gather much interesting information.".…
