Half tan leather with marbled boards; red leather spine label with gilt titles. Boards significantly rubbed and worn. Rear hinge and joint cracked though holding firm; front board held only by strings. Internally generally remaining crisp and bright, though with offsetting throughout; foxing mostly only affecting the endpapers. Generally clean, though with staining (early ink spillage?) affecting four pages, not obscuring text. Soiling to closed textblock edges. Includes an engraved plate showing hand tools.…

Frontispiece of the Woburn Beech, 7 other engraved plates, including 4 printed in sepia with hand tinting, three of which are folding, index; 278pp; title foxed, small stain at head of early leaves. 8vo contemp. half tan leather, green marbled boards, spine gilt, with black leather label, some wear on extremities, William Pontey [1782-1831], who had a nursery near Huddersfield, wrote a number of highly regarded books on trees. On the title page, he describes himself as "Planter and Forest Pruner" to the Dukes of Bedford. In the advertisement at the end of the book, it states he will give "Directions and Designs in every Department of Ornamental Gardening.…

Hardcover. pp.222, with engraved frontispiece plus 4-pages of adverts plus four labelled samples of three woods (Larch stained (2 samples), Scotch Fir and Spruce Fir). Samples enclosed in blue paper, further wrapped in a folding enveloped attached to rear pastedown as issued. Early pencil inscription to ffep. which reads 'Spruce, Fir & Larch, most recommended'. Scattered spotting to contents. Contemporary binding of paper covered spine over boards, showing wear to spine and boards held by a couple of cords only - last section of book similarly held by stretched cords. Unusual for copies to have the samples of wood present. First published in 1796 and here greatly expanded to include forest trees in general, and to argue the benefits of using British timber: "It will be observed, that though the present is called a second edition, it may be considered as nearly a new work; the former being chiefly devoted to the cultivation of Larch, and Scotch Fir; and hence, though most of the sentiments are retained, a regard to method, has rendered it necessary to write most of the work anew" (Advertisement, p. 6).…

Leeds, T. Inchbold, 1826. 8vo (23.2 x 14.2 cm). xxiii, 248, vii, [iv] pp.; nine engraved plates. Original blind boards. Spine with original printed label. = A seldom-seen presentation copy, to P. Wormald (?) Esq., signed by the author with inscription on title, dated 1827. First published in 1805 it was very successful. This edition is the updated and expanded fourth, which is definitely much less common than the first three editions. Slight wear to boards, spine cover abraded at to end, the front board near-detached; otherwise a very good, clean copy.…

Ownership signature at the top of the title page of "J. Melville." With 2 corrections in ink in the text: p. 163, two lines from bottom - "fine" altered to "fire"; p. 165, eight lines from the top, "and a half" inserted between "feet" and "distance" - possibly authorial.
