Die US-amerikanische Sängerin Rosa Ponselle (1897-1981), von Enrico Caruso entdeckt und gefördert, war eine der herausragendsten Sängerinnen der Operngeschichte. Sie gehörte ab 1918 über 19 Spielzeiten der Metropolitan Opera in New York an, sang aber nie an einem anderen amerikanischen Opernhaus. 1929-31 war sie am Londoner Royal Opera House am Covent Garden engagiert und 1933 gab sie ihr einziges Gastspiel in Italien an der Florentiner Oper. 1937 zog sie sich überraschend aus dem Bühnenleben zurück und arbeitete dann als Gesangslehrerin. Zu ihren Schülern zählten u.a. Beverly Sills und Placido Domingo. Der italienische Tenor Giovanni Martinelli (1885-1969) ist in seinen ersten Erfolgen mit dem Musikverlag Ricordi in Mailand verbunden, wo ihn Arturo Toscanini und Giacomo Puccini für die europäische Premiere von dessen neuer Oper "La fanciulla del West" in Rom verpfichteten. Er stand 50 Jahre auf der Bühne. u.a. an der Mailänder Scala und über 30 Jahre an New Yorker Metropolitan Opera, wo er nach dessen Tod Caruso ersetzte. Gelegentlich wurde er in der Opernwelt auch als dessen bedeutendster Nachfolger bezeichnet. 1967 gab er mit 82! Jahren seine Abschiedsvorstellung in Seattle. Sprache: de.
