Binding shows shelfwear, rubbing, and chipping, with significant cracking to joints (in spite of which binding remains stable). Marbled endpapers; ribbon bookmark sewn in. Text block edges tinted red. Scattered ink underlining and marginalia. Text block age-toned and slightly foxed. Ownership inscription reading "Langdon Lauriston Ward [Paris, July 29, 1902]" on front free endpaper. With engraved title page, head- and tailpieces, and initials. This copy is from the second of two variants printed by the famous Elzevier brothers, Bonaventura and Abraham, in 1640. Ex-libris of previous owner (T. Thornhill) on top pastedown. Latin and Greek type. Slight foxing. Blind stamped and gilt black and red morocco binding, marbled pastedowns; spine with five raised bands, gilt title and flower ornamentation; corners slightly worn. A fine copy. Two editions were published in 1640. This one, the first edition and the more beautiful exemplar, which also contains the dedicatory letter by the Dutch scholar and manuscript collector Isaac Vossius (1618-1689). The second edition does not include the dedicatory letter, but it does include little summaries at the beginning of each chapter which do not appear here. The Philippic Histories, in 44 volumes, focussed on the Macedonian Empire founded by Philip II and on its expansion under Alexander the Great and his successors. The original text of Trogus s Philippic Histories survived solely through the famous summary produced by Justin and through excerpts by other authors, including Jerome and Augustine. The engraved title page signed by Cornelis Claesz Duysend (fl. 1630-1640) depicts the naked Fortuna or Occasio on a shell in the sea while holding her typical attribute of the sail. Willems 502.

Esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Celebre edizione di questo classico latino scritto dal noto storico romano dell'epoca degli Antonini, Marco Giuniano Giustino. "Di Giustino ci resta l'Epitoma Historiarum Philippicarum Pompei Trogi, ossia il riassunto non sappiamo quanto rispondente all'originale in percentuale di testo conservato dell'opera dello storico narbonese d'età augustea. In effetti, Giustino resta fedele al proposito espresso nella Praefatio di estrapolare quanto non risultasse utile: eliminati i discorsi diretti, tipici della storiografia e le digressioni troppo ampie, l'epitome di Giustino conserva lo scheletro della narrazione. L'opera, interessante più per la parte aneddotica che per quella storica, spesso disordinata ed erronea, ebbe larghissima diffusione nella tarda romanità. Essa risulta un ottimo esempio di epitome anche a livello stilistico, perché "nella forma e nella sostanza vi è la diseguaglianza propria di chi a volte si tiene vicino alla fonte, a volte se ne allontana così da compendiare intere pagine in brevi parole"". Esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione.
