First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author and Duke Kahanamoku to the Australian musician Robert George Porter on the front free endpaper, "Merry Christmas 'Aloha' Duke Kahanamoku 23-11-63" and "For Rob. E.G. With every good wish, Jack Pollard". Porter (1942-2021), who performed under the stage name Rob E.G., was born in Sydney and had several number one hits in the city, rising "swiftly to become one of the biggest stars in Australia as the 1960s dawned" (Sydney Morning Herald, 31 December 2021). Duke Kahanamoku, who provides a foreword, was an Olympic medallist in swimming and an "unofficial ambassador of goodwill" for Hawai'i (ANB). He formed Hui Nalu, a still active surf-club in Waikiki, in 1911, and is credited with popularizing surfing and bringing the ancient Hawaiian pastime to a global audience. His 1914 surfing exhibition at Sydney, Australia's Freshwater Beach, is widely regarded as a seminal event in the development of surfing in Australia. Large octavo.
