Five volumes in hardback bindings with vellum spines and gilt lettering, plus handwritten reference numbers to bottom of spines. General wear to exteriors, as shown, with marks and scuffs, some discolouring. Each front pastedown with bookplate of General Theological Seminary Library New York and a ink initials of previous owner which have offset to a few ffeps. Each with half and letterpress titles, volume one with folding frontispiece. A few blue library stamps here and there. Pages are complete. Age toning, some damp staining and occasional marks or spotting, otherwise pages are generally clean, as shown. On the first fly leaf a dated (1844) private manuscript ex-libris. A fine copy with two complete religious publications pertaining to Council of Trent. Both authors - Pole and Ayala - played an important role at this Council. Pole, whose mother was atrociously executed by king Henry VIII, was the last Roman Catholic archbishop of Canterbury and a fierce opponent of the king. Pérez de Ayala attended all three sessions of the Council. He was archbishop of Valencia. He choose Benito Arias Montano to accompany him to the Council. He made a reputation for denouncing the corruption at the Council. His ''De Divinis.'' is his main work. He discusses here idolatry, the veneration of the relics of Saints, their tombs and images.
