Pocock was an early member of the Institute of British Architects, and was Master of the Carpenters' Company. "As an architect he was competent but unremarkable, his best work being in the Greek Doric style" [see: COLVIN, p.649]. An important wor…k being one of the first to survey interior decoration. ARCHER 63. BERLIN CATALOGUE 2319. From 1799 to 1827 he exhibited designs of minor works at the Royal Academy, the most ambitious of which was a 'Design for a Temple of Fame.' Plates clean and bright, remarkably so with modest toning to the text, and stamp on title page of Mercantile Library Philadephia. Recased in modern three quarter black morocco and marbled boards. Fine.

Some scuffing and bumps to corners, but overall good condition for inelegant original binding. 36 pages + 33 plates. 8 page catalogue of other books published by J. Taylor bound in at…the rear (a smaller size than the rest of the book). Printed on good quality paper, with wide margins. Inoffensive foxing, mostly noticeable in the margins. Text pages provide explanations for the plates. Plates themselves are quite handsome, sepia aquatints, with landscapes and floorplans. Plate-marks clearly visible. Pocock (1779-1849) had an extensive and varied architectural practice in England, Ireland and Canada, where he built the Ball and Supper-Room for th…e Mansion in Montreal, c. 1820. This pattern book sets out designs for a dairy, a number of rustic cottages, as well as designs for more grander undertakings, such as castles and abbeys, in the Gothic style. The final essay explores "the Causes of the Dry Rot". Clive Lucas has suggested that this pattern book could have been the inspiration behind the design for Hobartville, William Cox's residence in Richmond (Lucas, Australian Colonial Architecture). . Endpapers spotted otherwise very good.
