Zustand: Gut. pp. 40-59. With a dedication from the author. - From the estate of the classical philologist Ernst Vogt, editor-in-chief of the journals *Rheinisches Museum für Philologie* (19591967) and *Gnomon* (19701999; co-editor from 1975). - Slight foxing and minor wear, otherwise clean. - From the text: On the basis of my findings about the Odyssey published in The Sicilian Origin of the Odyssey (1957), Reality and Allegory in the Odyssey (1959)2, and a Note on [] in Hermes of July 1960, I would now argue that the poet of our Odyssey knew and made use of a number of passages to be found in the Hesiodic poems-the Works and Days, that is to say, the Theogony, and some at any rate of the Catalogues and Eoiae-whereas in the Hesiodic poems there appears to be no knowledge whatsoever of our Odyssey. It will follow naturally that these Hesiodic poems are earlier than our Odyssey-the poet of which, as will appear, looked upon them as one man's work: and it can in consequence be shown that their author was familiar with earlier, and in some respects quite different, legends concerning Odysseus's adventures in the Western Mediterranean-legends which had been handed down (as Strabo suggests in iii. 2. 12-13) from Mycenaean times, with clear traces of a once remarkably realistic knowledge of those regions. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'A Commentary on Cicero in Vatinium' provides an in-depth scholarly examination of one of Marcus Tullius Cicero's most biting and politically charged orations. Delivered in 56 BCE, the speech 'In Vatinium' was an interrogatory cross-examination of Publius Vatinius, a witness in the trial of Publius Sestius. This commentary elucidates the complex historical and legal background of the Late Roman Republic, offering critical insights into the political maneuvers and personal rivalries that defined the era.The work meticulously analyzes Cicero's rhetorical strategies, linguistic nuances, and the specific legal context of the interrogatio. By breaking down the structure and intent of the speech, the text explores themes of political corruption, the breakdown of constitutional norms, and the power of invective in Roman law. This volume serves as an essential resource for students and scholars of Classics, Roman history, and rhetoric, providing the necessary tools to navigate the intricate details of Cicero's prose and the turbulent political landscape of the first century BCE. It highlights the enduring significance of Cicero's work as both a masterpiece of Latin literature and a vital historical document. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
