This was a special educational opportunity to help concerned citizens understand this important issue and become better prepared to participate in national decisions. This forum sought to address "how can the United States safely store and dispose of plutonium dismantled from nuclear weapons?" The Co-sponsors of this forum included: Savannah River Site Citizens Advisory Board, American Nuclear Society (Savannah River Section), Citizens for Nuclear Technology Awareness, Energy Research Foundation, League of Women Voters--Augusta, Physician for Social Responsibilty--Atlanta, Savannah River Chapter of the Health Physics Society, and the Georgia chapter of the Sierra Club. This is a scarce surviving example of public discussion of complex nuclear material activities of the Department of Energy within the community where a major Nuclear Weapons Complex site was located. Speakers represented a broad spectrum of the Department of Energy and the surrounding community, along with international representatives, and community organizations.
