In den Warenkorb1686, 3rd edition. (hardcover) Good. [title leaf], [10], 473pp. 32mo. Diminutive volume, measuring 2.5" wide x 4.5" tall x 1.25" thick. Bound in full vellum; title compartments in leather to spine, lettered in gilt. Entire spine with diamond-ruled decorative pattern in gilt; gold much rubbed and faded. The binding was presumably done or, at the very least, extensively repaired in the mid-19th century given the fact that there is a bookplate on the front-pastedown dated 1867 with portions of what appears to be an original leather spine laid beneath. Vellum dust-dirtied; rubbed; circular dirtied spot at head of top cover, presumably from a long-since removed sticker. Covers stiff, somewhat splayed. All edges of textblock done in blue marbling; top edge notably dust-darkened. Marbled eps. Armorial bookplate to front-pastedown that reads "Esperance En Dieu / 1867"; common enough in antiquarian collections. Textblock surprisingly clean through; some dirtying and toning to the prelims; some dampstaining at the foot of the textblock early. Else internally clean. Text in the original Latin on the left within black-border textbox; vulgar Italian translation on the right. Title page device of a wood-cut vignette of a ship. Overall, an attractive, uncommon antiquarian copy of this text. This issue being the 3rd Edition of this work. First published in 1657 in Valenza. Second issue in 1670 in Venice.…

Quarto. pp [56], 704, 703-778, 801-808, 807-846, [120]; extra engraved titlepage depicting a pensive scholar working at his desk intended to represent Pliny or a classical author. Primary titlepage printed slightly tanned, in red and black with engraved printer's vignette. Several woodcut ornaments and illuminated initial capitals in the text, which is in Latin. The final 120-page section is an index. Bound in contemporary full calf with five raised bands to the spine dividing it into six compartments each with heavily gilt ornaments; red morocco title label laid down in second section from top with gilt title lettering. Edges of boards and corners rubbed and some surface scouring to sides. Various notations to the prelim pages tell us the book once belonged to one Mary Cholmondely with the date of 1835 written beneath her pencilled hand. Another manuscript note, this time in pen, claims "this volume was bought from Neumayer in Charing Cross Rd, London, on the 6th January, 1933, by Charles J.E. Grundy - Westminster 9/1/33". In yet another hand we have the ownership signature of one Ricardi Heber, with the date 1791, inscribed in faded ink to the flyleaf. According to Wikipedia, a Richard Heber (1773-1833), descibed as an 'English book collector' born in Westminster, edited the works of Silius Italicus, before developing a taste for collecting classical works of literature. 'His taste broadening, he became interested in early English drama and literature, and began his collection of rare books in these departments. Succeeding on the death of his father in 1804 to large estates in Yorkshire and Shropshire, which he considerably augmented, he forthwith devoted himself to the purchase of rare books'. Heber is perhaps the most famous and oft-cited exemplar of early nineteenth-century bibliomania, and of book collecting on an epic scale. Book. …

Handsome first edition of Philemon Holland's renowned English translation 'Over and over again it will be found that the source of some ancient piece of wisdom is Pliny.' (PMM 5) A handsome first edition, first issue of Philemon Holland's renowned English translation of Pliny's Natural History. The most popular of Holland's translations, it had never before been printed in English, and would not be attempted again for another 250 years. One of the greatest translators of the Elizabethan age, Holland's Pliny was an important source for Shakespeare. 'In Othello's allusion to the Pontic Sea, Shakespeare was clearly drawing upon Pliny's Historie as translated by Holland⦠Similarly Pliny has also been cited as a source for Othello's reference to the "medicinal gum" of "the Arabian trees"' (Payne, Search for Meaning, 63), and many trace Caliban in The Tempest to Holland's Pliny. 'The importance of Pliny lay not so much that he was an inexhaustible source for monsters, eclipses, and the stranger habits of all created things, but that in the pages of Philemon Holland's translation Shakespeare found that emphasis on Nature which he employed and re-interpreted in the tragedy' (Evans, The Language of Shakespeare's Plays). In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. A lovely copy of the English Edition. 2 vols. in one, [58], 614, [42]; [12], 632, [85]pp., elaborate woodcut printers device to title, woodcut head and tail pieces, floriated wood cut initials, folio in 6s, contemporary panelled calf, morocco label to spine, , a.e.r., London, Adam Islip, 1635 Second English Edition of the translation by Philemon Holland, originally published by Islip in 1601. This encyclopaedia of ancient knowledge about the natural world had already had a great indirect influence in England, as elsewhere in Europe, but had not been translated into English before, and would not be again for 250 years. Indeed, after four centuries, Holland is still the only translator of this work to attempt to evoke its literary richness and beauty" (ODNB). The Natural History, divided into 37 libri, or "books," was completed, except for finishing touches, in 77 CE. In the preface, dedicated to Titus (who became emperor shortly before Pliny's death), Pliny justified the title and explained his purpose on utilitarian grounds as the study of "the nature of things, that is, life" ("Preface," 13). Heretofore, he continued, no one had attempted to bring together the older, scattered material that belonged to "encyclic culture" (egkyklios paideia, the origin of the word encyclopaedia). Disdaining high literary style and political mythology, Pliny adopted a plain stylebut one with an unusually rich vocabularyas best suited to his purpose. A novel feature of the Natural History is the care taken by Pliny in naming his sources, more than 100 of which are mentioned. Book I, in fact, is a summary of the remaining 36 books, listing the authors and sometimes the titles of the books (many of which are now lost) from which Pliny derived his material. The Natural History properly begins with Book II, which is devoted to cosmology and astronomy. Here, as elsewhere, Pliny demonstrated the extent of his reading, especially of Greek texts. Books VII through XI treat zoology, beginning with humans (VII), then mammals and reptiles (VIII), fishes and other marine animals (IX), birds (X), and insects (XI). In Books XII through XIX, on botany, Pliny came closest to making a genuine contribution to science. Although he drew heavily upon Theophrastus, he reported some independent observations, particularly those made during his travels in Germany. Pliny is one of the chief sources of modern knowledge of Roman gardens, early botanical writings, and the introduction into Italy of new horticultural and agricultural.
