Dt. (DBA I 508, 216ff.). Einband etwas berieben. - Engelmann/Preuss II, 525. Nicht bei Schweiger und Moss.…

Rare early Antwerp edition of the Letters by Plinius Secundus, in a beautiful contemporary pigskin binding. This edition is virtually a reprint of the edition by Johannes Sichardt published in 1530 by Andreas Cratander at Basel. Sichardt (ca. 1499-1552) was since 1527 professor in Rhetoric in Basel. His dedicatory letter to Georgius Ilsungus (ca. 1510-1580), dated Augsburg, March 1530, is reprinted here also. Although the editio princeps of these famous letters was printed at Venice in 1471, all later editions, including the 1530 edition at Basel, are based on the Aldus edition of 1508 which added many new letters. Also the dedicatory letter by Aldus Manutius to Aloisius Mocenicus, a Venetian senator who had brought some manuscripts of the letters from France to Venice, is re-printed in our present edition.Writing in the first century, Pliny the younger (ca. 61-112 AD) was in a position to provide essential information for historians of a poorly documented period: the reigns of Domitian, Nerva and Trajan. In his letters he comments elegantly on social, domestic, juridical, and political events. His remarks on the early Christians are well-known and are very important. Nine books of his personal letters - 247 in all - survive, as well as his official correspondence with the emperor Trajan, posthumously published and later added as the tenth book. These official letters are a major source for understanding Roman provincial government.Of his speeches delivered during his successful senatorial career only the one of thanks to Trajan for his consulship in AD 100 survives and is known as the Panegyricus Traiano Augusto dictus, and is added on p. 321-405 of our edition. The work further includes Suetonius' set of biographies of Roman men of letters, Obsequens' work on prodigies that lived from 249-12 BCE, and Cataneus' life of Pliny. With a slightly later ownership's entry on the title page ("sum Wolfgangi Joechlinger"), and another underneath ("A[nn]o [1]610 (?)"). The front board is somewhat water stained, some insect droppings and a worm hole on the back board, the boards are slightly rubbed, but the blind-tooling is overall quite clear. The leaves are slighlty browned and occassionally (water) stained or foxed, annotations in some of the margins and between the lines on some of the leaves. Otherwise in good condition.l Belg. Typ. 4018; Machiels 990; STCV 12923944; USTC 400687. Contemporary blind tooled pigskin, sewn on 3 supports with the corresponding raised bands on the spine, both boards tooled in a panel design with floral motives in the 2 central panels, surrounded by a border with portraits on the front, and passion scenes and saints on the back, the manuscript initials "E.K" on the front, remnants of white leather closing ties. With several decorated woodcut initials. Pages: "494" [=496], [39], [1 blank] pp. Including: (2) SUETONIUS TRANQUILLIUS. De viris illustribus liber. (3) OBSEQUENS, Julius. Ab anno urbis conditae quingentesimoquinto, prodigiorum liber imperfectus.(4) CATANAEUS, Johannes Maria. C. Plinii Caecilii secundi Vita. …

Zustand: molto buono. in-8 (148x93 mm), ff.

| [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] New edition. Couverture rigide. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] First edition of these two works, illustrated with a frontispiece by Jongmann, and a title vignette for the first, and a title vignette for the second. Title pages in red and black. Copy with the large arms of the city of Amsterdam stamped on the boards. Dutch binding in full rigid gilt vellum. Spine with raised bands decorated with the arms of the city of Amsterdam. Boards stamped in the center with the arms of the city of Amsterdam, a first decorative border with the arms of the city of Amsterdam in the corners, a second wider decorative border. Traces of ties. Gilding slightly faded on the large arms of the boards. Spine yellowed. Despite the mentioned defects, a very handsome copy, rare in this condition. Edition produced by Johannes Arntzenius and incorporating the commentaries of François Juret, Juste Lipse, Jan Gruterus, Petrus Faber, Jan Lievens, as well as the prefaces and discourses from previous editions. The panegyric of Trajan was delivered on September 1st or October 100; it was indeed traditional to produce a speech when appointed Consul. This is the only example of this type of discourse that remains from the high Roman empire. Before being published by the author himself, he completely reworked and considerably expanded it. Edition abundantly annotated at the bottom of pages. The panegyric of Tracatus, who was professor of rhetoric in Bordeaux in the 4th century, is a praise of Emperor Theodosius, on the occasion of his victory over the usurper Maximus. It is an important document on Theodosius's ascension to the throne, his military career and his politics. The edition was likewise produced by Johannes Arntzenius with the same commentators. * (6) xcii, (22) 469pp. (57).…

First Venetian edition of three distinct works historically attributed to Pliny the Younger (62-ca. 113 CE). The biggest part of the present work is comprised of Pliny's celebrated letters, offering insight into Roman social, domestic, legal, and political life, which were composed between 97 and 112 CE. Books I-IX contain correspondence with friends, colleagues, and prominent figures, while Book X preserves official letters to Emperor Trajan, including queries regarding provincial administration and early Christian communities. Pliny's letters are noted for their historical significance, famously including his account of the Vesuvius eruption in 79 CE and the death of his uncle, Pliny the Elder (ca. 23/24-79 CE).Also included are the Panegyricus Traiani and De viris illustribus. The former is a rhetorical address delivered on the occasion of Pliny's consulship in 100, extolling the virtues, moderation, military success, and just governance of Emperor Trajan in contrast to Domitian. A key example of imperial panegyric and an important source for understanding official Roman political ideology. The latter is a collection of biographies of illustrious, attributed to Pliny the Younger. However, the author is uncertain, Sextus Aurelius Victor (ca. 320-390 CE) is preferred by 16th-century bibliographers. It provides a literary and historical record of notable figures of the Roman world. This edition is evidently the sole surviving impression edited by Antonius Moretus to combine these three works. With a manuscript ownership inscription from the Jesuit Library of Oettingen in Bayern, Germany ("Residentia Societatis Iesu Oetingae") in the upper margin of the first printed leaf. The recto of the first blank leaf bears a manuscript list of 22 short book titles, (including, for example: "2. Vocabula rerum, 4. Index capitum, 5. P. Terentius, Grammatices latinae, 11. Catonis, 14. De conservata bona, 15. Pocolica Maronis"). A few early underlinings underlinings and marginal annotations are present throughout. With a small wormhole in the lower margin of the first few leaves (not affecting the text), and some occasional browning and staining throughout. Otherwise in good condition.l Early European Books, fra-bnf-ars-00002907-001; Goff P 812; GW M34362; Hain 13117; Harper Cat 769; IDL 3737; ISTC ip00812000; Madsen 3320; Proctor 5129; USTC 991907; WorldCat 711964442. 18th-century limp vellum, with 2 pairs of blue cloth ties, and with some (faded) inscriptions in brown ink on the front board.
