The Whole Drawn and Settled by the Most Eminent Counsel of Their Time, viz. Serjeant Agar, - Bootle, - Belfield, Sir W. Chapple, Serjeant Draper, Sir J. Light rubbing to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, front board beginning to separate, rear joint cracked, corners bumped and somewhat worn, early owner signature (Jacob Kinney) and early Philadelphia bookseller ticket to front pastedown, front free endpaper partially detached. Light browning, somewhat lighter in places, and light foxing to text. $250. * Second and final issue of work first published in London in 1786. With an index and table of cases. According to the Preface, this book was originally compiled by "a gentleman of considerable knowledge and experience at the bar, for his own more immediate use" (iii). The ownership signature may be that of the Jacob Kinney who was County Clerk of Augusta County, Virginia, from 1793 to 1818. Kinney also served as a state senator. The bookseller's ticket is that of "H. & P. Rice, / Booksellers, / No. 16, South Second, and / No. 50, Market-street, / Philadelphia." Henry Rice and Patrick Rice were prominent booksellers and publishers in late eighteenth-century and early nineteenth-century Philadelphia. English Short-Title Catalogue N12155. As noted by Holdsworth, pleading was a topic of "great and growing importance" during the seventeenth century. This importance is evident in the large number of pleading manuals issued at this time.
