In den WarenkorbNo. 86 OF 120 COPIES. 210 x 148 mm. (8 1/4 x 5 7/8"). 2 p.l., 154 pp., [2] leaves. Original tan morocco-backed patterned paper boards by Max J. Adjarian of Malibu, California (binder's ticket on pastedown), raised bands, gilt lettering to spine, edges untrimmed. Title page with elaborate woodcut frame, woodcut frontispiece, and printer's compass device in colophon. Front pastedown with the "E. H. H." book label of E. Harold Hugo (with "N. E. H.," for Nancy E. Hugo, pencilled beneath the monogram - see below) and with separate book label of Nancy HUgo . See Harmsen, The Plantin Press of Saul and Lilian Marks, p. 20. A pristine copy. This fine press edition of Shakespeare's sonnets features exquisite typography and striking woodcuts. The Plantin Press was founded by Saul and Lillian Marks in 1931. Saul (1904-74) had trained as a printer in Poland before coming to the United States in 1921, and after a decade of setting type around the country, he settled with his new bride in Los Angeles, where they founded a press dedicated to simple, high-quality hand printing. Lillian continued the press after her husband's death, closing in 1985, after issuing approximately 150 books in addition to ephemeral pieces. Their work is considered to be among the highest quality of the American fine presses of the 20th century, with intentionally limited productions enabling the Markses to meticulously control every detail. Librarian, bibliophile, and printer Tyrus G. Harmson wrote of the press that "the twin hallmarks of the shop, to borrow a phrase from John Carter, are taste and technique." The present work, funded by booksellers Jacob Israel Zeitlin and Josephine Ver Brugge, was set in Alfred Fairbanks' Narrow Bembo italic on thick, creamy paper, and is decorated with the highly detailed woodcuts of Mary Kuper. Our binder Max J. Adjarian (1929-2002) was a master book restorer who came from France to Cornell University in the early 1950s, then lived and worked in Kansas before moving to California. His binding tools and papers are now in the Special Collections of the University of California at Riverside. Our copy is from the library of scholar-printer E. Harold Hugo (1910-85) and his daughter Nancy. Hugo ran the Meriden Gravure Company from 1962-75 and sat on the board of the Stinehour Press from the time of its founding. He was known throughout his career as an advocate for fine printing, leading to numerous awards for himself and his company.…

In den WarenkorbAntverpiae ( Antwerpen ), Ex Officina Christophori Plantini, 1583, format in-folio, 425 x 285 mm, Incomplete copy, (only the first half of the Old Testament is present). Collation: *2,**6 , A-Z8 , Aa-Kk8, and Ll (this last leaf in finely written manuscript). This copy contains the first 426 pp (of a total of 1202 pp). It icludes all the preliminary leaves together with the first half of the Old Testament (until the book JOB). Our copy contains also 12 of the 13 full page/double page engraved plates which illustrate the complete bible, including the engraved title page (missing is the groundfloor of the temple in Jeruzalem ). Binding : Contemporary leather over oak boards, with clasps (clasps entirely missing), one oak corner broken away (repairable). Leather with large portions of blind panel stamps remaining. Binding very worn, parts of leather missing, with traces of old restorations. A curious element of the binding is a manuscript title written on a vellum slip (format 25 x 110 mm) attached on the upper part of the front cover by means of 12 small copper nails (only 2 nails remaining). The two paste downs are large vellum manuscript leaves taken from a 14th-15th c. bible (400 x 270 mm) (neatly written with blue and red initials, written in three (!) columns glosses on the left, main text in a large letter with interlinear text in the smallest letter. (from a Carthusian bible ?). Allthough only 1 part (of three) is present here the most important maps and illustrations are to be found in this copy. It contains the famous world map by Arias Montanus (dated 1571) taken , as all other full page illustrations from the Biblia Polyglotta (1568-73). The map has the word ''Gentes'' added to ''Jecktan'' in the lower left box which indicates that this is the second state (from 1572). Bibliog. Shirley(World) 125, 2nd state. This map is reputed to be the first to show something of Australia (a spurious landmass, probably no more than the engraver's licence) (see Schilder, Australia //20) . All full page ill. in good condion, without trimming. (only the map of Israel show a small hole (size 2 x 12 mm). We thought it a pity to remove this valuable map from the book because as we shall explain below the book offers some interesting features making it worthwhile to preserve it as it is Provenance: The bible was owned and used by the Carthusian monks of Liège. This follows from a (18th-19th c.) note on the fly leaf ''Cette Ste. Bible etoit pour les leçons des matines a la Chartreuse de Liège''. When acquiring this bible we could partially reconstruct its owner history. Last owner was the bible-and missal printer-publisher Dessain of Mechelen (Brabant) Dessain was from Liège and he bought in 1855 the printing business of P.J. Hanicq in Mechelen. The copy is very carefully rubricated with large capitals in red and black in the margin, in a contemporary hand. It also contains many words which have been suppressed by means of small tipped on strips of paper . E.g. Pp a4 recto : two words replaced, written on correction paper strip. Ppa5 recto: marginal note cancelled in ink. .and so on. We presume that the first users (Carthusians of Liège) did the rubrication (corroborated by a note in the margin of pp. a ''In refectorio'', same hand as other rubrication letters. Did a later hand (an ''editor'' ?) made text corrections ( in view of new edition ?). This might have been a predecessor of P.J. Hanicq. ( Jean-François Broncart of Liège made a bi-lingual in-folio edition in 1702 ??) Printed on strong paper, interior generally in good condition, some pages with thumbing in lower margin, some marginal paper restorations, two engravings blackened by a prudish censor. Overall good interior condition. Intriging copy of one of the finest products of the Plantin press, albeit incomplete still valuable with its important world map.…

In den WarenkorbAntwerpen, Plantin Press, October 1899, poster size 55 x 40 cm, printed in red and black with types and vignets of the Plantin-Moretus Museum. The document has a typographical border, printed in gilt, with floral motifs. The style of this border points to the Antwerp printer and publisher Buschmann. The poster (document) is printed as a gift of the organizing committee to August Beernaert to thank him for his support for the festivities. It bears the holograph signatures of Max Rooses (curator of the Plantin-Moretus Museum), Jan van Rijswijck (mayor of Antwerp) and Georges Caroly (art maecenas). August Beernaert (Oostende 1829 - Luzern 1912) was a Belgian catholic statesman . He was Belgium's prime minister from 1884 until 1894. He was awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1909. He was an ardent art collector. The Plantin-Moretus museum opened in 1877. The first curator Max Rooses made frequently use of the typographical material of the former printing house to publish e.g suites of 16th or 17th engravings. Some of the items were of an ephemerical nature such as this unique poster printed on vellum. …
