Together with a loosely laid in autographed letter by Vita Sackville-West to the same recipient John Wilson (of Bumpus), dated 'Nov. 1st 1944' ; 2 pages on Sissinghurst Castle, Kent letter-headed paper : 'Dear Mr. Wilson, I was nicely brought up to pay my bills promptly! I wonder if you have got any books on forestry or aforestation? My younger son thinks of going in for this after the war, and I should like to send him something to read about it; the more technical the better. I know he has already got a book called 'Forestry for Woodmen,' but if you have anything else in stock I should be most grateful if you could tell me. Also, is it possible to obtain "A Garden of Herbs," by Eleanour Sinclair Rohde? and if so, could you send a copy to Miss W. Macmillan Q. A. I. M. N. S. No. 2 British General Hospital C.M.F. and the bill to me or, failing this, is there any other book on herbs and herb-growing? I fancy there was one by a Miss Amherst, called "My Herb Garden" or something like that. There is, of course, "A Modern Herbal" by M. Grieve, but that is too big. Two heavy volumes - which would be merely a white elephant to an army nurse in Italy. Yours very sincerely V. Sackville-West'. J. G. Wilson's pencilled name to the front paste-down. James G. Wilson was Chairman at Bumpus Bookshop and 'one of the kingpins of the thriving literary life of London during the 1930's. .He ruled supreme from his Marylebone Lane Bookshop' (Times 3rd July 1981). The artist George Plank (1883-1965) was an American illustrator, known for his long association with Vogue magazine, and employed by Vita's mother, Lady Sackville, as an interior designer. This poem, dedicated to Sackville-West's lover Dorothy Wellesley (1889-1956), was "an ambitious attempt to write a modern version of Virgil's Georgics by celebrating the annual round of the Kentish farming year" (ODNB). There would be six print runs in the first three years of its publication aided in part by Vita Sackville-West winning the 'Hawthornden Prize for Literature' in 1927 for this title. (Cross & Ravenscroft-Hulme A.13(b)). A very sharp association copy of an increasingly elusive title. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
