Jack London (1876-1916) was one of the first American authors to gain international fame and accumulate wealth from his writing. Despite his popularity, London never received any literary awards for his work. London is remembered today through retellings of his stories on film and television, most recently in a movie adaptation of The Call of the Wild starring Harrison Ford.

As stated in the introduction, this publication was compiled to study the epidemic in detail, in the hope that such learning might benefit Great Britain in the event of an outbreak of the plague in its own territories. The information in these reports proved to be of value during the intense study of the plague in the 1890s, which led to the identification of the disease's origin in 1894. The compilation comprises three parts: the first contains extracts from reports of the medical officers of the local government board, the second is a memorandum by Mr. Netten Radcliffe and the last contains a few papers considering the medical aspects of quarantine.Binding worn at the edges and the paper spine damaged at the head and foot. 8vo. V, (1), 117, (1) pp. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Very rare study of Constantinople's plague epidemic of the year 1778, by an anonymous eyewitness. Though not himself a medical man (as he confesses in the preface), he feels that most of Europe's learned physicians lack a practical understanding of the illness, for which reason he here sets out his own experiences in writing. - Only six copies in libraries worldwide, mostly in specialized medical research institutions (Wellcome, Institut Pasteur, New York Academy of Medicine, National Library of Medicine etc.). - Binding rubbed and chipped in places, but a very good copy. - Wellcome II, 446. Indexed record of monuments, epitaphs, and gravestones in Nuremberg's Johannisfriedhof (St. John's) and Rochusfriedhof (St. Rochus) cemeteries, with an impressively skeletal frontis by Nuremberg engraver Johann Azelt. Both cemeteries were established outside the Old Town walls during plague outbreaks in the 1510s, with St. John's expanded from the existing leper's cemetery dating back to the 13th century. One notable St. John's resident is painter and printmaker Albrecht Durer, whose marker is typographically rendered on p. 95. St. Rochus, established as a dedicated plague cemetery, takes its name from the 14th century Majorcan confessor and patron saint of invalids (and dogs) who was said to have cured many plague victims throughout Italy with a Sign of the Cross and was said to have survived it himself. Gugel (1648-1706), son of nobleman and chief lower court assessor Christoph Hieronymus Gugel, studied in Leiden and travelled before returning to Nuremberg, busying himself with chronicling the monuments herein as well as a family history. Eighteen copies via OCLC at time of writing, chiefly in Germany, with two in the US at Harvard Divinity School and the Pennsylvania Office of Commonwealth Library, and none in the UK. Full title translation: Memorial Cemetery of Noric Christians. In den WarenkorbLetter signed (secretarial copy). 8vo. Manuscript in brown ink, edges slightly dusty, otherwise clean and fresh. Docketing to verso reads "Carta a Torre". [2], [2 blank] pp. Lisbon, H.Q. Grilo Barracks, A fascinating letter, sounding the alarm of incoming plague from Algiers and outlining the initial public health measures taken to stop the spread. It lays the blame on Algerian corsairs, who are said to have infected foreign ships, the crews of which have then passed the disease on in various ports and their home countries. The letter thus orders the Governor of the Tower of Saint Vincent to stop any vessel (Portuguese or foreign) approaching Lisbon harbour, and hold it at sea until clearance is granted by the Department of Health. It states that all small boats are to be checked, even fishing smacks going out just beyond the bar. In that way, fishing and other local maritime activity were allowed to continue, with the necessary precautions taken on their return each evening. Manuscript material on efforts to control the plague in eighteenth-century Europe is fairly common, as the threat was so consistent and widespread. Examples linking it to piracy or privateering, however, are decidedly uncommon. This example is especially scarce, as (anecdotal) evidence of corsairs spreading disease from North Africa to the Iberian Peninsula. .
