Minor edge soiling. This is one of The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory Series in Science and Engineering. Vincent L. Pisacane is a member of APL's Principal Staff and has been the Assistant Director for Research and Exploratory Development since 1991. He also holds a joint appointment with The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, from which he received the Information Systems Award in 1991. He received a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Drexel University in 1955, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in applied mechanics from Michigan State University in 1957 and 1962, respectively. Dr. Pisacane joined APL's Space Department in 1967 and was Department Head from 1985 to 1991. He also teaches several courses in applied physics at The Johns Hopkins University G.W.C. Whiting School of Engineering. He has published over 50 articles and reports and was recently a co-editor of a book entitled Fundamentals of Space Systems, in which he was also the author of several chapters. Robert C. Moore was also affiliated with the Applied Physics Laboratory of The Johns Hopkins University. This important work, summarizing as it were the state of knowledge, the state of practice, and the state-of-the-art at the end of the twentieth century, addresses Space Systems Engineering, Space Environment, Astrodynamics, Spacecraft Propulsion, Flight Mechanics, Launch Systems, Spacecraft Control, Space Power Systems, Spacecraft Thermal Control, Spacecraft Configuration, Structural Design, Space Communications, Telemetry, Data Processing, Reliability, Quality Assurance, Integration and Test, and Mission Operations. This multidisciplinary book is intended for individuals interested in understanding, planning, designing, and managing the design, fabrication, integration, and testing of instruments and systems for use in outer space. The authors provide an introduction to the development of space instrumentation and spacecraft systems and subsystems by presenting the principles of systems engineering necessary to formulate the development process and the salient technical characteristics of the functional subsystems. The depth is sufficient to permit the reader to generate an initial mission concept within the boundaries of a given set of specifications. The book exposes the reader to the underlying scientific and engineering foundations as well as the current practices so that they will understand how to carry out appropriate tradeoffs. Topics are covered to the depth that should allow the carrying out of the concept design of a space mission by making the trade-offs necessary to satisfy a given set of needs or systems requirements. For the uninitiated or the more narrowly focused space specialists, this book serves to broaden one's perspective and increase the breadth of one's capabilities. An understanding of this material will also permit professionals to carry our broader assignments and begin the transition to careers in systems engineering, aeronautical technical leadership, or managing the development of space systems. The content can also serve as a good introduction to more focused study.
