Mrs Piozzi, otherwise known as Hester Thrale, was a Welsh-born diarist, author and socialite who is best known for her friendship with Samuel Johnson, with her diaries and correspondences with the noted author providing important biographical information on the life of Johnson. This work includes her memoirs, letters and notes, including new anecdotes on Johnson which had not been previously published. Bound in full calf. Externally smart with fading to the spines, slight marks to the boards, and only mild rubbing to the extremities and joints. Bookplate belonging to 'Arnold Haskell' to the front pastedown. Internally firmly bound with lightly age toned and clean pages with spotting just to the front and rear. Very Good Indeed. book.

Perney was domestic chaplain to the Earl of Coventry. The violinist Felix Janewicz (17621848) was a Polish exile from France who made his London debut in February 1791. From the celebrated collection of Baron Houghton (in Lot acquired at Chiswick Auctions).
