This and the books to follow have a prototype in the Atlante fotográfico, or Photo-Atlas, of the Duomo of Modena which came out ten years ago and marked Panini's début in the world of art-publishing. The format of that book has been the object of long and careful reconsideration in numerous discussions, to which many individuals not listed in the acknowledgements contributed help and advice. Among these I should especially like to thank Adriano Peroni, Daniele Benati and Massimo Dolcini. -- The purpose of the series, as is declared in its general title, is to illustrate the 'Wonders of Italy1 as rigorously as possible. The long Vatican Gallery, with its maps representing the country at the height of its glory towards the end of the 16th century, might well figure as an emblem of the whole project. -- This is a new kind of art-publication, in that it revolutionises the concept of the illustration. In place of the usual select number of plates included as illustrations to the text, we offer the reader a series of images that are the result of carefully planned photographic surveys, aiming to transport the entire historic monument onto his table. The camera reveals remote or hidden details invisible to the naked eye and fixes on the page a complete sequence of images calculated to satisfy both the aesthetic sense of the general reader and the needs of the scholar. -- These volumes, then, are a new sort of Atlas ', capable of delineating a world that is often difficult of access and of guiding those who wish to visit it step by step. The images are accompanied by essays and notes of a high scholarly standard which themselves call on a large number of additional images. -- The book format, the explanatory charts and the topographical and documentary precision will all permit the cultural heritage that is Italy's pride to be better known and cared for and will help spread that knowledge still further abroad. -- Especially in view of the decision to publish all text in Italian and English, which will allow non-Italian readers to benefit from the expertise of the authors of the essays and notes in the second volume of each publication. -- Franco Cosimo Panini - Elenco delle Carte geografiche - List of the Maps -- Italia antica - Ancient Italy -- Italia moderna - Modern Italy -- Liguria - Liguria -- Toscana e Lazio se.…

hardcover. Full color illustrations. 1130 pages. 4to, blue cloth, gilt spine, titles in three volumes. Slip case with some scuffs, otherwise in very good condition with embossed magnifier and index of place names. Modena: Franco Cosimo Panini. A fine copy. In a long, bright corridor in the Vatican Palace is one of the world's treasures: The Gallery of Maps. Lined with forty richly decorated map frescoes of Italy and its regions, the Gallery offers a "walking-tour" of Italian history and geography. All forty of these extraordinary frescoes are thoroughly discussed and splendidly illustrated with 40 folded maps in color in this 3 volume set plus hundreds of colour and black and white images throughout. Text in English and Italian. Designed by Egnazio Danti, a well-known cosmographer and mathematician, the Gallery of Maps is the most original and ambitious cycle of its kind. It remains, to this day, the largest cycle of geographical images in Europe. For the art lover, map lover, and historian, "The Gallery of Maps in the Vatican" provides an excellent introduction to this glorious masterpiece.…
