The first Irish edition of The Poetical Works of Peter Pindar, a collection of poetry by English satirist John Wolcot under the pseudonym Peter Pindar, 'a distant relation to the Poet of Thebes'. In full contemporary calf, with the original half-title. With the original endpapers. Famous for his witty memoirs and talent for comic verse, Wolcot was famous for poking fun at members of the establishment as seen in this charming volume, including Johnson biographer James Boswell as well as literary reviewers. Despite becoming blind in later life, Pindar wrote satire until his final days and was believed to have published approximately seventy works. In full contemporary calf, with the original half-title and original endpapers. Externally, crack to spine at gutter resulted in split binding. The odd mark to boards, with rubbing to joints and edges. Creasing to spine with fading to spine label. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Faint cracking to front and rear joints. Slight spotting to end papers. A small worming puncture to leaf pp.7-8. Internally, hinge failed between pp.210-223, and loose leaves pp.221-222. After the government attempted to secure silence by the bestowal of a pension, and the queen's solicitor got into action, he confined himself to smaller game, such as Sir Joseph Banks, Sylvanus Urban, and James Bruce the African traveler. He was buried in St. Paul's Church, Covent Garden where by his own wish his coffin was placed touching that of Samuel Butler. He had many imitators, who wrote under the same and similar names.
