Cloth. Zustand: Good Only. The first edition of Laurent"s complete prose translation of Pindar"s victory odes, accompanied by Gilbert West"s substantial history of the ancient Olympic Games, complete in two volumes. In the publisher's original cloth backed paper covered boards. Front board of volume II almost fully detached, just holding at lower cord. The first edition of Peter Edmund Laurent"s prose translation. Complete in two volumes. The complete English prose translation of Pindar"s surviving victory odes, accompanied by extensive explanatory notes and a substantial historical study of the ancient Olympic Games. The odes celebrate victors at the four great Panhellenic festivals: the Olympic, Pythian, Nemean and Isthmian Games. Laurent"s notes explain Pindar"s language, historical allusions, geography and mythology, drawing upon earlier editions and commentaries listed in the preliminary matter. The second volume includes Gilbert West"s Dissertation on the Olympic Games, first published with his own translation of Pindar in 1749. It examines the origins and restoration of the Games, their chronology and administration, events, honours, and importance of the festival. Pindar (c.518-c.438 BCE) was a Theban lyric poet and the foremost surviving composer of Greek victory odes. Forty-five complete odes survive. Peter Edmund Laurent (1796-1837) was a French-born classical scholar, linguist and traveller who taught modern languages at Oxford. An engaging union of classical poetry and sporting history. Hardcover. Zustand: Near Very Good. First West translation edition. 4to. [6], i, [23], iii-ccvi, [4], 3-315, [1], [2] (pages of publisher's advertisements) pp. Half recent calf over marbled boards with the spine in six compartments, recent purple label lettered in gold on the spine. Recent grey endpapers and pastedowns. The original endpapers are bound in. Title page printed in red and black with a woodcut bust of Pindar. With woodcut tailpieces. Brueggemann 80. Moss 419. The Monthly Review was highly complementary of West's translation of Pindar: "The whole of Mr. West's book is indeed a treasure ." The first edition of West's Pindar is rather difficult to find in commerce. Pindar is arguably the most famous of the Archaic Greek poets. His poetry is notably difficult to read (in Greek and English). His most popular pieces are focused on the celebrations and high points of the Olympic games. His poems help the historian to put the Olympic games in their proper context, and they help the historian understand what the games meant to Ancient Greek citizens and athletes alike. A pleasing edition of the Greek poet's work. The book is somewhat bowed and the top textblock has an old dampstain, a few of the leaves affected have subtle repairs to their top edges. The binding is quite clean.…

In addition to the Dissertation on the Olympick Games and Pindar s Odes, this work includes translations of Horace, Euripides, Lucian, and other classical poets. Though Gilbert West s Odes of Pindar is only the third version of these poems to have been translated into English (the first by Sternhold and Hopkinsin 1713), his translation was arguably the most popular version in the eighteenth century. Just several months after this publication, the poet Joseph Warton wrote An ode, Occasioned by reading Mr. West s Translation of Pindar ; and some scholars have suggested that Thomas Gray s Pindaric Odes, written at the beginning of the 1750s, are to some extent in conversation with West s translation. In Lives of the English Poets (1779), Dr. Johnson praised West s Pindar: Of his translations I have only compared the first Olympick ode with the original, and found my expectation surpassed, both by its elegance and its exactnessA work of this kind must, in a minute examination, discover many imperfections; but West s version, so far as I have considered it, appears to be the product of great labour and great abilities .…
