'Het VMNW beschrijft de Nederlandse taal zoals die was tussen 1200 en 1300. Het baseert zich daarvoor voornamelijk op het zogenoemde Corpus Gysseling, de verzameling van alle in het Middelnederlands geschreven teksten van vóór 1301, overgeleverd in origineel of in een 13de-eeuws afschrift. De Gentse filoloog en taalkundige dr. Maurits Gysseling (1919-1997) wijdde zijn werkzaam leven aan het bijeenbrengen van deze 13de-eeuwse Nederlandstalige documenten uit archieven en bibliotheken in het Nederlandse taalgebied. Al zijn materiaal werd tussen 1977 en 1988 uitgegeven in het Corpus van Middelnederlandse teksten (tot en met het jaar 1300), beter bekend als het Corpus Gysseling. Het INL wilde Gysselings strikt diplomatische edities gebruiken om op basis daarvan een woordenboek te maken van het Nederlands van de 13de eeuw. De diplomatische werkwijze, waarbij de editeur dus geen enkele ingreep in de teksten gedaan had, garandeerde een 100% zuivere kijk op het toenmalige Nederlands. Het woordenboek zou daarenboven een belangrijke aanvulling op het Middelnederlands Woordenboek (MNW) van Verdam vormen, omdat het vele 13de-eeuwse oorkondenmateriaal bij de samenstelling van het MNW door Verdam amper gebruikt was. (.) Het VMNW voldoet aan alle eisen die men aan een woordenboek moet stellen. Maar het is meer. Het is ook een encyclopedie voor alle zaken waar onze 13de-eeuwse voorvaderen zich mee bezighielden en voor de kennis die zij toen bezaten. Het is op die manier een ware spiegel van de samenleving van die tijd. Het is ook een grondig naslagwerk voor wetenschappers, zoals taalkundigen en historici, een Fundgrube voor taalliefhebbers of voor hen die onderzoek doen naar hun lokale geschiedenis of naar hun eigen dialect.
