In 2012, Antwerp is no longer the Hollywood-on-the-Scheldt as it was in the seventeenth century; however, the metropolis still remains a dynamic context for artists, mus…eums, art institutions both great and small, and contemporary art galleries. -- Following the tradition of predecessors such as Rubens and Van Dyck, many of Antwerps artists of today also enjoy an international reputation. One of the most important of his generation is the visual artist, theatre maker and author Jan Fabre. Born and bred in the northern Seefhoek district of Antwerp, Jan Fabre presented his exhibition PIETAS at the Nuova Scuola Grande di Santa Maria della Misericordia during the 54th Venice Biennale. Consequently, it is with justifiable pride and great pleasure that we are able to display this fascinating work in Antwerp during the summer of 2012. This presentation dovetails together neatly with a summer full of contemporary visual art, including Thomas Schütte at the renovated and enlarged Middelheim Museum in the semi-open pavilion by the architects Robbrecht & Daem, and works by Roman Signer, Ai Weiwei and Philippe Van Snick. The M HKA ( Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp ) is presenting the first retrospective of leading American artist Jimmie Durham. The Extra City Kunsthal exhibition centre will be acquainting us with the work of South African photographer Santu Mofokeng. -- As a contemporary artist, Jan Fabre has used PIETAS to take on one of the great themes from Western art history and, in so doing, has given it a modern-day interpretation. The work is not religious, but it is sacred: we are witnesses to a confrontational and almost unearthly beauty. The theatrical positioning of the five sculptures on a platform clad in gold leaf enables the observer - even in this former train maintenance depot - to come into immediate contact with what unifies us and with what transcends us: mercifulness and compassion contrasted with the fate that is shown mercilessly of a mother clinging on to her dead child. In Fabres vision, the mother has a skull for a face: rather than have her child dead, would it not be far better that she herself had died? -- In Antwerp, the Pietas have found temporary accommodation in a former train depot at the successful Park Spoor Noord landscaped park. This was a place that appealed to the artist straightaway; not only because of the building itself, but also because of the location. This spot is in fact just as easily accessible to people as is Venices abundance of churches and schools. Consequently, it is hoped by the artist, the owner of the works and the city council that people from the neighbourhood and from the city at large, as well as visitors to Antwerp, will seize the opportunity to come to this very spot and see the exhibition in order to experience this confrontation with so much beauty, splendour, magnificence and hope alongside suffering and despair.
