De L'Imprimerie de Joseph Bullot 1753. 29 full page plates, 10 x 8, later blind-tooled leather, edges are gilt-tooled, raised bands, gilt-ruled red spine label with gilt letltering, red speckled page edges, later floral- patterned endpapers, 171 + 1. Covers rubbed, scuffed/scraped, some shelfwear, corners and spine tips bumped and worn, wear to outer hinges along spine spine label, bookplates, bookplate removal marks on rear endpapers, pencil notes on reverse of the ffep, scattered foxing, light toning, plate X has a diagonal tear (approx 1.5") and not too noticeable as it goes across two of the figures, plate XI lacks lower right corner, some smudging from the printer's ink else clean, tight and very good. The NUC lists 47 plates with the number of folding plates varying. This copy has 29 of 29 called-for plates, plate XIV is the only folding plate. The remaining plates appear to be complete and unaltered. Regarding the plates being done by Albinus, Ludwig Choulant in his "History and Bibliography of Anatomic Illustration" stated that Albinus supplied the plates for "Myo- Graphie" and another work of Tarin's "Osteo-Graphie." Choulant wrote that Bernard Albinus was a pioneer in creating accurate representations of the human body. Albinus believed "To reproduce, not free hand (according to the view), as is customary, but from actual measure: to reproduce what the best in nature displays: to reproduce, not as demonstrators of anatomy generally do, by merely placing before the eyes of the artist what they have uncovered, but by collecting (data) from one body after another, and making a composite according to rule so that the actual will be displayed, etc. . . ." Pierre Tarin, 1725-1761, was a French doctor, writer and translator who was most well known for his contribution to Diderot's "Encyclopedia" In addition to "Myo-Graphie" and "Dictionaire Anatomique" Tarin also authored "Osteo-Graphie," "Adversaris Anatomica" and "Anthropotomie." Very scarce, especially since these two scarce works are bound together.

Minor edge wear to the boards; a very good, crisp copy with the plates in strong impressions. The French anatomist, Pierre Tarin (1725-61), ".was responsible for the section on anatomy in the 'Encyclopédie' of Diderot and is eponymously remembered for the 'valves of Tarin'. This atlas of the skeletal system of the fetus and adult contains many excellent detailed folding plates. Several of these plates were taken from the anatomical atlases of Albinus. Following a lengthy introduction to the study of human anatomy in French, the remainder of the text is presented in Latin and French on opposite pages." (Heirs of Hippocrates 961). A series of nine plates treat the skull and its structures in considerable detail, and a number of long folding plates illustrate the full skeleton. Choulant, p.283. N.L.M. (18th C.), p.445. Première édition française, due à Pierre Tarin du Syndesmologia, sive historia ligamentorum corporis humani (Saint-Pétersbourg, 1742) de Weitbrecht. Comme nous l'apprend le traducteur français dans son "Avertissement", il s'agit, en réalité, d'un "extrait" et il ne faut donc pas s'étonner si un in-4 assez considérable se voit réduit à un petit in-8 : "Je me déterminai donc à en tirer tout ce qui est purement anatomique pour me servir de base dans les leçons que j'avois à faire sur ces parties [.]. J'ai enfin destiné cet extrait à l'impression pour qu'il devint d'une utilité plus étendue; et j'ai aimé mieux ne donner qu'une description purement anatomique des ligamens [.] J'ai fait réduire à moitié les figures, afin de ne point jetter les étudians dans de trop grands frais en multipliant les planches". Après celles de Winslow, les descriptions de Weitbrecht sont considérées, dès le XVIIIe siècle par Tarin notamment, puis par ses successeurs au XIXe, et aujourd'hui par les spécialistes de l'histoire de la médecine, comme d'une absolue nouveauté et d'une grande fiabilité : "one of the first attempts to describe the ligaments as a unit of anatomy. Many similar descriptions were repeated in detail in the middle of the nineteenth century by anatomists who were apparently not aware that Weitbrecht was the first to describe them. Ligaments in the knee joint that bear the eponyms of Wrisberg, Humphry, Robert, and perhaps others, were originally well described by Weitbrecht" (Hagelin, Kinetic Jottings, p. 84).
