Ganzlederband der Zeit auf 5 echten Bünden, mit Buntpapiervorsätzen und Dreiseitenrotschnitt. Nur außen stark gebraucht und mit einigen Lederdefekten sowie kleinen Läsuren an Rücken und Deckeln incl. Ecken und Kanten. Auch sind die Rückenschilder und Rückenvergoldungen nur fragmentarisch erhalten. Innen ca. 3 Anfangslagen im oberen Bug etwas wurmstichig, die Lage M mit 12 Blättern leicht gebräunt incl. kleinem Wasserfleck an einer Ecke. Sonst innen gut erhalten, auch die hübschen Kupfer sind sauber. Ce 3ième et dernier vol. contient en 22 chapitres la description de la faune et flore de cette colonie hollandaise. Peter Kolbe was a astronomer, and surveyor. Sent to the Cape of Good Hope by the mayor of Amsterdam, Nicolaas Witsen, he was to compile an extensive astrological and geographical to survey of this region of South Africa. He was appointed the first official astronomer in South Africa, and continued to work at the Cape between 1705 and 1713. His accounts explored the people and their customs, the flora and fauna of the country, and its geography. European readers of his accounts was fascinated by his account of a giraffe. Illustrated with six folding maps, and in text illustrations. Collation unavailable, but appears to be complete. Dated using COPAC In full calf binding. Externally worn. Rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. A small amount of worming to the front board and spine to the head. Worming and rubbing has resulted in a small amount of loss to the head of the spine. Rubbing to the rear board, resulting in a small amount of loss to the leather. Tidemark to the rear board. The marbled front and rear endpapers are worn. Small ink stain to the front pastedown. Front and rear hinges are strained by firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean. The odd spot and handling mark throughout. Tide mark to the two folding map on 1pp, only affecting the map edge. Good. Various (illustrator). book.

Peter Kolbe (1675-1726) was an astronomer who traveled to the Cape of Good Hope in modern-day South Africa for astronomical research from 1704 to 1713. In 1719 he published this seminal work on natural history, the Khoekhoen people, and Dutch settlers in South Africa.
