The 19.5 x 27 cm front panel of an envelope, with the flap. In fair condition, lightly aged, with slight discoloration to the cover from the three seals. In the top right-hand corner of the cover is written the word 'Particuliere'; at bottom left is the signature 'Guizot'; slightly to the left of centre is the address: 'Monsieur le comte de Jarnac | Chargé d'affaires de France | à Londres'. The three seals in black wax adhering to the flap. None has the full impression and only one is complete. In pencil on the flap is a note regarding Guizot's motto: 'Omnium recta brevissima | The right (i.e. honest) course is the shortest (most direct) of all.'.

4to, 1 p. Good, on aged paper worn at extremities. Text clear and entire. Gives details of his placement in 1837 in the 'cadre de reforme de la Garde Nationale', and of the registration of the decision by the Mayor. 'Cette décision [.] m'est réclamée par le nouveau Sergent major de la compagnie, M. Alger, et je viens vous prier de m'en faire délivrer une copie dûment légalisée.'.

He also produced many highly attractive lithographic prints depicting the glories of the Pyrenees region in southwestern France, as illustrated in this volume. The scenes depicted include the city of Pau, several towns and villages, spas, mountain ranges and peaks, numerous waterfalls and cascades, and lakes.

320 x 412 mm. + wide margins. A proof, without background scenery. Signed by the artist in pencil at lower right margin, with "Etat" in pencil above signature. On laid paper. A scene from Verdi's opera Rigoletto, with a calendar of saints days for 1883 flanking the stage. Uniformly browned. Béraldi: les Graveurs du XIXe Siècle, 1. Victor Hugo's play, upon which the opera was based, was banned in France after its initial performance. Signed.

The recipient is Lady Ann Cullum (1807-1875), widow of Sir Thomas Gery Cullum (1777-1855) of Hardwick House, Bury St Edmunds. 1p, 12mo. On grey paper. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded twice. The salutation of the letter ('My dear Lady Cullum') is in English, the rest in French. Written at a turbulent period in Guizot's life, following the Revolution in 1848, with the overthrow of the monarchy and its ministry of which he himself was head. That February, with the mob still in control of Paris, Guizot had been forced by Louis Philippe to resign as Prime Minister, and had fled to London, where he had taken up residence in Pelham Crescent, Brompton. He is 'bien heureux de profiter de votre aimable invitation', and his daughters are highly pleased by 'l'honneur de vous être présentées et des plaisirs de votre foire de Bury'. But after having passed 'un mois dans le bord de la mer dans le Suffolk', they have returned to Brompton. 'Quelques uns de mes amis sont venus de France pour me voir. Je ne puis les quitter. J'ai repris des travaux que je ne voudrois pas interrompre.' He ends with the usual extended French valediction.
