Across six chapters, Pierling traces Peter the Great's visit to the Sorbonne in 1717, the faculty's Mémoire on the possible reunion of the Eastern and Western Churches, and the responses of Russian ecclesiastics, followed by the clandestine Jansenist mission of the abbé Jean-François Jubé to Moscow under the patronage of Princess Irène Dolgoroukov. The narrative explores Jubé's secret correspondence and efforts among the Russian clergy, set against the shifting ecclesiastical politics of the reigns of Catherine I of Russia, Peter II of Russia, and Anna of Russia, culminating in the failure of the mission and Jubé's expulsion. The work concludes with the fate of his Russian collaborators, including Archbishop Theophylact Lopatinski. The narrative culminates in the complex diplomatic manoeuvres that produced the Truce of Jam Zapolski of January 1582.
