W. Plâté & Co. was a prominent photographic studio in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), founded in 1890 by Alfred William Amandus Plâté, a German-born apothecary. The Plâté firm was instrumental in popularizing photography on the island and quickly became renowned for its high-quality photographic postcards, capturing the island's landscapes, people, and daily life during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By 1907, their annual postcard production reached half a million. ".Plâté provides an important testimony to the development of colonial Ceylon during a crucial period of many changes, and a substantive repository that provides a visual archive to support further historical research." Delightful colour folding pictorial map, 39.5 × 54.5cm, This tourist pictorial map, likely published in the 1910s during the Taisho period, depicts Kankake Mountain on Shodoshima, an island in the Inland Sea, now famous as Kankakei (???) for its vibrant autumn colours. The map traces a path from the foot of the mountain to its peak, highlighting notable sightseeing spots and prominent peaks along the way. A brief description promotes the year-round beauty of the area. Illustrations of native monkeys appear in the four corners of the map, while a portrait of Emperor Ojin is featured at the top centre, alluding to the legend that he visited the island around the 4th century. An inset map at the bottom right shows a wider view of the island.…

Soft cover. Very good. Slight age toning. Size 13 x 8 Inches. A very unusual 1954 map of Guam and zine, The Sultan Sentinel , published for crewmembers on the outbound Pacific voyage of the S.S. Sultan. The Sultan Sentinel was a daily zine published daily on board the U.SN.S. General Daniel I Sultan for the entertainment of the soldiers on board. This edition of the crudely printed and copied 8 page magazine featured onboard movie schedules, crew poetry, news, sports news, lost and found, cartoons, and a spiritually affirming letter from the ship's chaplain. The presently offered full 'Souvenir Edition' was published in June 22, 1954. The cover features a charming pictorial map of Guam identifying sites important to American Military men, such as Anderson Air Field, the Santa Rita Housing Area, Hoover Park, and more. Although shipboard zines were not uncommon, few have survived. The present offering is the only example of any issue of the Sultan Sentinel we have been able to identify.…

Very good. Original fold lines visible. Blank on verso. Size 30 x 26 Inches. This is an attractive 1979 U.S. Geological Survey's pictorial map of Callisto, a moon of the planet Jupiter. This map was compiled from images from Voyager 1 and 2 and is centered on Callisto's and the Solar System's largest multi-ring crater basin Valhalla. The Asgard formation, the second largest multi-ring structure, is also shown in this map. The North Polar Region and the South Polar Region are represented in two insets in the upper left and right quadrants respectively. The primary mission of the Voyager 1 and 2 at the time of launch was to explore Jupiter and Saturn. Since then, the mission objective has been extended to exploring the Solar System beyond the outer planets, as far as the Sun's sphere of influence and possibly even beyond the outer limits of our Solar System. Voyager 2, launched in August 1977, flew by Jupiter and Saturn and continued on to explore Uranus and Neptune, becoming the only spacecraft to visit these outer planets. It is also the only spacecraft to have studied all four giant planets of our Solar System at close range. Voyager 1, launched in September 1977, also flew by Jupiter and Saturn and continued on toward interstellar space. Both space crafts are carrying a golden record explaining their origins and containing sounds and images portraying Earths life and its culture in all its diversity. Although departing the Solar System in different directions, both Voyagers have reached the Heliosheath, where the solar wind mixes with interstellar wind. This map was prepared for the Voyager Imaging Team in cooperation with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and published as Atlas of Callisto Topographic Series Jc 25M 2RMN map I-1239 by the U.S. Geological Survey.…

Very good. Original fold lines visible. Blank on verso. Size 31 x 34 Inches. This is a fine example of the U.S. Geological Survey's 1992 pictorial map of Enceladus, the sixth largest of Saturn's moons. An inset in the upper half of the map features the North Polar region of Enceladus. This map was based on the images from Voyager 1 and 2. Although departing the Solar System in different directions, both Voyagers have reached the Heliosheath, where the solar wind mixes with interstellar wind. Since the Cassini-Huygens Mission to Saturn in 2005, new and intriguing discoveries have been made about Enceladus, including the presence of an atmosphere, water rich geysers, the presence of escaping internal heat, etc., all prompting further elaborate studies of Enceladus. Michele Dougherty of Imperial College, London says, 'I think Enceladus is one of the best bets we now have for finding life on another world in our solar system.' This map was prepared for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and published by the U.S. Geological Survey as Atlas of Saturnian Satellites Topographic Series map I-2156 sheet 1.…

Very good. Original fold lines visible. Blank on verso. Size 22 x 20 Inches. A fine 1992 U.S. Geological Survey map of Iapetus or Japetus, the third largest moon of the planet Saturn. A large portion of this map depicts the large dark area of Iapetus, the Cassini Regio, named after Giovanni Cassini, the discoverer of Iapetus. The North Polar Region is featured in the upper half of the map. This map is based on the images from Voyager 1 and 2. Very good. Original fold lines visible. Blank on verso. Size 26 x 29 Inches. This is a beautiful 1992 U.S. Geological Survey map of Mimas, moon of the planet Saturn. The large crater Herschel, named after William Herschel, the astronomer who discovered Mimas, is identified in this map. Curiously, because of the shape of Herschel, Mimas sometimes resembles the Death Star depicted in the movie Star Wars . The movie however, was made in 1977, three years before the discovery of Mimas. The South Polar Region is featured as an inset in the lower half of this map. This map is based on the images from Voyager 1 and 2. The primary mission of the Voyager 1 and 2 at the time of launch was to explore Jupiter and Saturn. Good. Some wear on old fold lines. Size 13.5 x 19.25 Inches. This is an unrecorded 1952 pictorial view of the Italian Lakes region, published by Editrice S.A.S. Among other features, it highlights the network of regional autostrade (highways), including the Autostrada dei Laghi, often considered the world's earliest motorway. A Closer Look Coverage spans from Iselle and Domodossola on the Swiss border south to Lago d'Orta in the west to Lago di Como in the east, taking in Lago Maggiore, Lago di Lugano, and several smaller lakes. Cities and towns, major roads (autostrade), railways, mountains, rivers, and lakes are illustrated and labeled throughout. Regional and international borders are traced, including around the Italian enclave of Campione d'Italia, which is surrounded by the Swiss canton of Ticino. Distinctive buildings of some of the larger towns and cities are drawn, as are boats and bathers in the lakes. Autostrada dei Laghi The Autostrada dei Laghi connecting Milan to Varese (Autostrada Milano Laghi) opened in 1924 and is often considered the world's first dedicated motorway, a forerunner of all later highways. The road was conceived by civil engineer and civic leader Piero Puricelli (1883-1951), who, in 1921, won approval to build a toll road with one lane in each direction between Milan and Varese in the Lakes Region. It was a bold gamble, as, at the time, Italy had only about 50,000 automobiles, although the number was increasing rapidly. Furthermore, roughly half of Italy's cars were located in Lombardy, with most of those in and around Milan. In time, the road proved to be extremely successful, facilitating easy travel for Milanese seeking weekend getaways as well as travelers from further afield, and formed the basis of an expanded network of autostrade throughout northern Italy. Publication History and Census This view was prepared and published by Editrice S.A.S. in Arona in July 1952. As the name suggests, it was intended as a souvenir for tourists and likely would have been sold at a souvenir shop in one of the lakeside towns depicted here. It is quite rare; we have been unable to locate any examples in institutional collections.…

Very good. Light wear and toning along original fold lines. Size 17.25 x 8 Inches. This is a c. 1960 International Parks Highway promotional pictorial map highlighting U.S. Highway 85 and 385, which ran north-south from Canada to Mexico. Circular vignettes promote national parks and other important or interesting sites along the route. A Closer Look Highlighting U.S. Highways 85 and 385 from the U.S.-Canada border to the U.S.-Mexico Border (with an extension north to Missinipe, Saskatchewan, Canada), vignettes highlight national parks, other important sites, cities, and towns. Previously known as the International Parks Highway (now called the CanAm Highway), the national parks along the route include Prince Albert National Park in Saskatchewan, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial National Park in North Dakota, Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota, and Big Bend National Park in Texas. Cities and towns along the route are identified and connecting highways are labeled using the U.S. highway shield. National parks labeled here but are not on either route include Glacier National Park, Yellowstone National Park, and Carlsbad Caverns. Bismark, Pierre, Butte, Cheyenne, Omaha, Lincoln, Denver, Topeka, Pueblo, Santa Fe, Oklahoma City, and Austin are featured in vignettes. Dating the Map While this map is undated, through our research we learned that the numbering for U.S. 385 has been used twice. The first route to bear the number U.S. 385 became part of U.S. 87 and the 385 designation was decommissioned. The current U.S. 385 was first designated as such in 1959. As far as we know, every location marked on the map predates 1959 (we believe the latest to be the U.S. Air Force Academy which was established in 1954) thus our date of c. 1960. The International Parks Highway Association The International Parks Highway Association (1938 - 19xx) was an American highway association founded with the purpose of creating a north-south highway from Big Bend Park in Texas (which at the time had not yet been designated a national park) to the national parks of Canada. The association was founded in the Chisos Mountains of Texas when members of the Highway 51 Association voted to rename their organization the International Parks Highway Association because it was 'more impressive'. Highway Associations The movement promoting the construction of 'good quality' roads did not begin with the invention of the automobile, but rather with the bicycle. At the time, most interurban roads were unpaved and impractical for cycling. The 'Good Roads Movement' was inaugurated in May 1880 to advocate for bicycle enthusiasts, riding clubs, and manufacturers. By 1910, the American Automobile Association (AAA) jumped onboard, along with over one hundred other local and national organizations. 'Road booster' organizations emerged to promote specific, often branded, highways. By the 1920s, about 250 'named' highways, each with their own boosters, crossed the United States. 'Road boosters' still exist, but most disbanded in the 1950s and 60s with the emergence federally funded Interstate Highway System. Publication History and Census This map was drawn by an artist known only as Anthony and published by the International Parks Highway Association c. 1960. We note a single cataloged example which is part of the collection of the State Historical Society of North Dakota State Archives. References: OCLC 953621739.…

Good. Several small tears professionally repaired. Uneven toning in margin, likely from earlier framing. Some surface abrasion at right and bottom. Size 19.75 x 15.5 Inches. A colorful pictorial map of the U.S. Virgin Islands, prepared and published in 1966 by Island Workshop. The map abounds with historical references to the islands' colonial past, when, at various points, they were divided between the empires of multiple European nations and entities. A Closer Look The top third of the sheet includes a general map of the region, including Puerto Rico. The seal of the United States with the date of the islands' acquisition (1917) appears at top center, while the coats of arms of Christopher Columbus and the Spanish monarchy appear at top-left and right, respectively. Ships in the foreground are labeled 'Ponce' for Ponce de Leon, while a smaller ship nearby might be a reference to the smaller ships of Columbus' voyages. Below, the islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John are illustrated, with insets of the cities of Charlotte, Amalie, and Christiansted. Other towns are labeled on the map and, in some cases, illustrated, along with airports and other features, such as a pier and racetrack on St. Croix. Bays, cays, and smaller islands are marked all along the islands' coasts. Illustrations of lush vegetation and the coats of arms of the various colonial empires that controlled one or more of the islands at various points interweave and surround the map. Danish America Like many Caribbean islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands islands passed through a series of European colonial empires in the early modern period. Following Christopher Columbus and the Spanish, the French, English, Dutch, and even the Knights of Malta each claimed part of the archipelago at one point, leaving a permanent mark on the islands, in their placenames, if nothing else. Between the late 17th and early 18th century, the Danish gained control of St. Thomas and St. John and purchased St. Croix from France. In the mid-19th century, following several slave revolts and amid the broader emancipation movement, slavery was abolished, though strict labor laws remained. By the late 1860s, the potential sale of the islands to the United States appeared to be a neat solution for both countries. It took fifty years for agreements to be reached and approved by the Danish Parliament; ultimately, the threat of the islands being utilized by Germany during World War I (1914 - 1918) finalized the 1917 sale. Since joining the United States, especially since World War II (1939 - 1945), the islands have experienced a tourism boom, the basis for a robust local economy. Publication History and Census This map was published by Island Workshop in 1966. Island Workshop was presumably a local outfit, but we have been unable to find any additional information on them. The only known institutional holding of the map is with the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library. References: OCLC 143608578.…

Very good. Light wear along original fold lines. Verso repair to a fold separation. Slight loss at a fold intersection text and printed images on verso. Size 23 x 17.5 Inches. This is a 1950s Pierre Vittier pictorial map of the Three Flags Highway, also known as U.S. Highway 395. A Wonderful Pictorial Map Known as the Three Flags Highway because it connected Canada, the United States, and Mexico, the map highlights the highway from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to Hamilton Ranch, Mexico, and depicts as far east as Wyoming and Montana. Wonderful pictorial vignettes appear along the highway's route. People are illustrated horse racing, fishing, skiing, hunting, and fishing, alongside natural landmarks such as Sequoia National Park, Mt. Whitney, Yosemite National Park, Lake Tahoe, and Banff National Park in Alberta. An illustration of the Grand Coulee Dam is included in Washington State. A Short History of the Three Flags Highway The Three Flags Highway, also known as U.S. Route 395, is a highway in the western United States with a cult following much like the celebrated U.S. Route 66. At its longest, the highway stretched 1,490 miles from San Diego Bay to the Canadian border and effortlessly connected with highways in both Canada and Mexico. Today, U.S. 395 has been significantly shortened in favor of Interstate 15, but remains an important north-south route along the Sierra Nevada Mountains and in eastern Oregon and Washington, where distances to other highways can reach into the hundreds of miles. Though not as well-known as Route 66, efforts are currently underway to reinvigorate the highway in order to preserve the historic landmarks and Americana that exist along its route. A Closer Look Cities and towns all along the highway are labeled, including Tijuana, Mexico, San Diego and San Bernardino, California, Carson City and Reno, Nevada, Walla Walla, Washington, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Jasper, Alberta. As this is a highway map, U.S. 395 is not the only highway illustrated. Highways snake their way across the western United States, all of which are labeled. Cities and towns throughout the region are also indicated, along with rivers, lakes, and other national parks. A mileage chart is situated along the right border, providing the viewer with distances between cities and towns from Jasper, Canada to Hamilton Ranch, Mexico in both directions. Publication History and Census This map was drawn by Pierre Vittier, lithographed by the Alex Dulfer Printing and Lithographing Company, and published by the Three Flags Highway Association in the 1950s. We note a single cataloged example in OCLC which is part of the collection at the Washoe County Library in Reno, Nevada. References: OCLC 49780615.…

Very good. Size 23 x 17.5 Inches. This is the 1963 second edition of Northeast Harbor artist Luther S. Phillips' pictorial map of Maine. A Closer Look Coverage embrades the state of Maine. Pictorial vignettes highlight the Kavanagh House in Damariscotta Mills, the John Holmes House in Alfred, and the Ruggles House in Columbia Falls. Maine's wildlife also takes center stage, with illustrations of a moose, a deer, and a black bear. Maine's many ski areas are marked by skier icons, while red dots identify golf courses. Flags note yacht clubs and triangles identify large and small marinas. A poem appears in the upper left, while a list of early Maine explorers occupies the left border. Publication History and Census This map was first drawn and published by Luther S. Phillips in 1946. His younger brother, Augustus 'Gus' D. Phillips, published this second edition in 1963 - present map. A third edition was published in 1980 by A. D. Phillips and Son. We are not aware of a cataloged example of the 1946 edition, but have seen one other example of this 1963 edition.…

Very good. Light wear along original fold lines. Closed tear extending one half inch into printed area from bottom margin professionally repaired on verso. Text and printed photographs on verso. A few manuscript annotations on recto and verso. Accompanied by original mailing envelope. Size 22 x 34 Inches. This is a 1949 Robert William Gadbois and Theodore J. Ritter cartoon pictorial map of the U.S. Naval Training Center Great Lakes. This example features overprinting wishing the viewer a 'Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Great Lakes' and an illustration of Santa in his sleigh with some reindeer and holly. A Closer Look The map illustrates the Navy training center on the banks of Lake Michigan just north of Chicago, Illinois, from the east. Coverage embraces from Camp Porter to Foss Park and from the drill field to Lake Michigan. Numerous camps, set up to house the tens of thousands of men present at the camp at any one time, are identified (most of which are named after Naval heroes), including Camp Downes, Camp Dewey, Camp Barry, Camp Moffett, and Camp Paul Jones. Ross Field, across from the main railway station, is named after Captain Albert R. Ross, who supervised the base's construction. The Naval Hospital is also prominently labeled, complete with a patient drawn chasing a nurse. Other comic illustrations include a man in a striped suit, sailors playing ping pong, and another sailor drilling holes in the Drill Field. Others include a sea monster in Lake Michigan wearing a sailor's 'gob cap,' a sailor riding a gigantic sea horse, and another sailor being romanced by a mermaid. There's even an octopus using a fishing pole to fish off a pier! A large decorative cartouche is situated in the lower left quadrant, just above an index of over one hundred buildings located throughout the base. U.S. Naval Training Center Great Lakes Naval Station Great Lakes was founded in 1905, and construction began that year. The base opened its gates on July 1, 1911. Great Lakes was then a fairly modest installation, occupying only 165 acres. By the end of World War I, in 1918, the base had grown to 1,200 acres, and over 125,000 sailors had passed through on their way to fight. After the war ended, the training of recruits slowed to a crawl and even halted for a while. The only major operations at the base were the air base and the Radio School. By 1940, however, with threats from both oceans, increased enlistments in the Navy were finally approved by Congress. Within ten months of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the base had grown from 172 acres to nearly 1,600, with seventeen separate camps in operation. By mid-1943, over 700 instructors were working at the base. Great Lakes was also the first naval installation to train African-American troops, although the base wouldn't be integrated until mid-1945. By the end of World War II, four million men were in uniform in the U.S. Navy, and over one million of them had passed through Great Lakes. Today, Great Lakes is the largest training facility for the U.S. Navy and even houses the elite Naval Special Warfare Preparatory School, where sailors hoping to become Navy SEALs are sent to train. Publication History and Census This map was created by Robert William Gadbois and Theodore J. Ritter and published in 1949. The present example is accompanied by its original mailing envelope, which also features Christmas illustrations: Santa is illustrated enjoying the enclosed map. We have handled two different editions of this map, one featuring the Christmas overprinting and another that does not. Only two examples of the edition without the overprinting are cataloged in OCLC. They are part of the collections at the Library of Congress and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and it rarely appears on the market. We are aware of no other examples of this map featuring the Christmas overprinting. References: Rumsey 8744.002. OCLC 948645527.…

Good. Wear along original fold lines. Slight loss at fold intersections. Size 17 x 22 Inches. This is a 1944 World War II era F. E. Cheeseman and Albert Richard pictorial propaganda map celebrating U.S. military aviation. Among other novelties, the map predicts a future with flying cars! A Closer Look The striking image radiates from a central image of a globe centered on the North Pole. The globe is overlayed with 9 air routes, illustrating distances between New York and various global cities. Information concerning historic flights is included: the first Transatlantic flight, Amelia Earhart's first solo flight across the Pacific, and the first aerial circumnavigation. Other wartime information is overlaid, such as the location of the 15 U.S. Air Force Commands, General Chennault's Flying Tigers in Southeast Asia, and the now famous Doolittle Raid. A table of air routes (specifically those depicted on the world map), with current and projected flight times, is included at the upper left. Planes, Planes, and More Planes! The map's most arresting elements are the two dozen aircraft dramatically illustrated. Each aircraft is labeled and accompanied by a laudatory caption. Among these are the B-17 'Flying Fortress,' the Chance-Vought F4U 'Corsair,' the Republic P-47 'Thunderbolt,' the Lockheed P-38 'Lightning,' and the North American P-51 'Mustang.' Each of these aircraft played a critical role in the Allied WWII war effort and demonstrated key technological improvements. This History of Aviation and Projections for the Future - Flying Cars?! Several text boxes create a sort of border around the aircraft and include information about the history of powered flight, U.S. military decorations, medals, citations, insignia, a 'dictionary of aviation terms', and an explanation of U.S. Army and U.S. Navy aircraft designations. Two boxes along the right contain predictions concerning the future of aviation, stating that 'giant skyliners will whisk you from New York to Miami before lunch' and that 'detachable wings will make your 'air car' an auto in the city - a plane in the country'. A sea change is predicted: the 'skyway of tomorrow' with flying freight trains. The insignia of the United Nations is illustrated along the bottom border. Publication History and Census This map was drawn by F. E. Cheeseman and published by Albert Richard Sportswear in 1944. We believe that each location that sold Albert Richard products was given these broadsides with the business's name printed on it, as Schlesinger's of West New York, is printed on this example. Today, this map is rare.…

Excellent. Size 7 x 7.5 Inches. A fascinating piece of Cold War propaganda, this map was published in 1966 in the PLA Pictorial , a periodical of China's People's Liberation Army. It presents U.S. military involvement in East Asia, including in Vietnam, as coordinated staging for an invasion of China. A Closer Look East Asia is presented with the People's Republic of China shaded in red. To the country's east and south, American ships and bases are indicated, including on Taiwan, which is shaded red like the mainland to reflect the P.R.C.'s territorial claims. More specifically, air, naval, and missile bases and the U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet are noted. These bases are divided into a first and second strategic line, bearing some resemblance to the 'First Island Chain' and 'Second Island Chain' discussed today in U.S. military and government documents. The first strategic line is divided into three sections, one emanating from Japan, a second from Taiwan and the Philippines, and a third from South Vietnam, Thailand, and the Bay of Bengal. China and the Vietnam War (Second Indochina War) When Chinese Communist forces occupied southern China, they provided a steady stream of weapons, supplies, and advisors to Viet Minh forces across the border in Tonkin. New units were formed, armed, and trained which were capable of launching full-scale offensives against French and French-aligned forces, resulting in the tide turning perceptibly towards the Viet Minh. Viet Minh troops also became increasingly effective at guerilla tactics, wearing down French supply lines and morale. The breaking point came with the Battle of Dien Bien Phu (March - May 1954), when the French overcommitted to a distant 'hedgehog' outpost that was difficult to relieve or resupply, leading eventually to the garrison's surrender. Afterward, the French government fell, and the 1954 Geneva Accords were signed, allowing for the independence of North Vietnam. This result would have been difficult to achieve, certainly within the same timeframe, without Chinese support. Even though China and North Vietnam had some issues between them (the Vietnamese were unhappy that the Geneva Accords were negotiated 'over their heads' by Zhou Enlai, for instance), the two countries remained close and North Vietnam modeled its political consolidation, land reform, and other policies on the Chinese experience a few years prior. With China under a U.S. maritime blockade and concerned about the potential for a U.S. invasion (their main motivation for intervening in the Korean War), continued support for North Vietnam and, by extension, the Viet Cong, was an easy choice as U.S. involvement in Vietnam increased during the 1960s. Domestic propaganda in China constantly played up the threat of U.S. invasion and glorified the Vietnamese people's resistance to 'U.S. imperialism'. However, by the time this map was published, Mao Zedong was already well on the way to determining that his greatest internal and external threat was 'Soviet Revisionism'. As the Sino-Soviet Split worsened, the relationship between China and North Vietnam likewise deteriorated, and several years later, the U.S. and China moved towards rapprochement. In recent years, as U.S.-China relations have again come under strain, Chinese concerns about U.S. military encirclement have resurfaced (though, within the PLA, they had never really disappeared). Publication History and Census This map was published in the April 19, 1966, issue of People's Liberation Army Pictorial , on the eve of the Cultural Revolution. It was an addendum to provide a clearer and more accurate version of a map that appeared in an article in the same issue, titled 'US imperialism is shifting its strategic focus to Asia and targeting China with its aggression ' (?????????????????????). The only institution noted as holding this map in the OCLC is Stanford University. References: OCLC 1082154110. Signed by Author(s).…

Very good. Chromolithograph. Attached to original binder. Size 17.25 x 24.25 Inches. This is a beautiful c. 1930 Intourist U.S.S.R. Travel Company pictorial map of the Caucasus. The map is most intriguing as while clearly a tourist-focused piece, the English-speaking audiences for whom it was intended are mysteriously absent. The English only established normalized relation with the USSR a year before, and the Americans had not. Moreover, this map appeared at the height of the Great Depression, when global travel dropped to a trickle. A Closer Look Printed in English, the map depicts the region from the Sea of Azov to the Caspian Sea and from Stalingrad (which had only recently been christened with that name) to Turkey and Persia. Cities, towns, and villages, including Astrakhan, Rostov-on-Don, Tiflis (the pre-1936 name for Tbilisi), Sochi, and Baku, are identified. The region's stunning mountains and beaches are illustrated, along with the railroad connecting Tbilisi and Baku with the rest of the Soviet Union. Ships ply the waters of the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, and an airplane flies from beyond the horizon to Baku and Tbilisi. A previous owner's name is written in pencil on the verso and appears to be Beatrice Manley. We have been unable to trace this any further. Some Historical Context The fact that this map is printed in English is intriguing, since Britain only established normal relations with the Soviet Union in 1928 - 1929, and the United States would not do so until 1933 - 1934. This is also the period of Stalin's first five-year plan, which was implemented in 1928. Stalin's reforms focused on rapid industrialization and the collectivization of agriculture. The glaring question concerning this map, and to which there is no clear answer, is who was the target audience for this piece, given that the Great Depression and the first five-year plan were ravaging the global and Soviet economies. That reality, coupled with the fact that the Caucasus were, and still are, a relatively remote part of the world, makes one wonder 'who were the tourists flying on that plane from beyond the Soviet horizon to Baku and Tiflis?' Chromolithography Chromolithography is a color lithographic technique developed in the mid-19th century. The process involved using multiple lithographic stones, one for each color, to yield a rich composite effect. Frequently, the process would start with a black basecoat upon which subsequent colors were layered. Some chromolithographs used 30 or more separate lithographic stones to achieve the desired effect. Chromolithograph color could also be effectively blended for even more dramatic results. The process became extremely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when it emerged as the dominant method of color printing. The vivid color chromolithography produced made it exceptionally effective for advertising and propaganda imagery.
