The first 1813 edition. A complete collection in two volume containing a miscellany of Scottish poems and songs, partly in the Scottish dialect and with an extensive glossary to the rear of volume two.Some of the titles included are 'Falsehood, a Pastoral,' 'Verses on a Caravan to go any Where,' 'Song, Long long did did gentle Peace reside,' The Answer,' and many others.A very scarce first edition of 1813. In the original publisher's paper covered boards.Two internally excellent volumes. A rare survival and in the original publisher's paper covered boards. Externally sound with some shelf wear and a minor edge wear, with some bumping to the head and tail of the spine. The spine is slightly creased vertically, as usual, with a minor cracking to the front joint of volume one. With a faint minor damp marking to the front board of volume two. The label to the spine of both volume is slightly chipped and faded. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. Good. book.

In den Warenkorb8vo, pp. 252; foot of title and next leaf torn away at foot, with later repairs (affecting one word on second leaf: the sense is easily recoverable); somewhat spotted at beginning, and with last leaf rather soiled; otherwise a good, usable copy in contemporary sheep, strongly rebacked. First and only edition of this collection by 'the poet of Paisley'. Ebenezer Picken had been intended for the church, but resisted the career mapped out for him by his father. This collection, published before he was twenty, made his name, and he was hailed as a bright new prospect for Scottish poetry by Alexander Wilson. However, when he began teaching, he failed to progress, and an effort in business was likewise unsuccessful; his marriage produced nine children, at least two of whom (Joanna and Andrew) also wrote poetry. Ebenezer travelled to America in 1809, but his health gradually failed, and he died of consumption in 1816. This is quite a rare book: ESTC locates only fourteen copies or rather, thirteen, since there is just one copy at the Newberry, not two. Provenance. Early inscription of John Jamieson on title page.
