Première édition française du manuscrit de Piccolpasso dans une traduction imitant le français moyen du XVI ème siècle par Claudius Popelin, peintre, émailleur et poète, l'ouvrage est illustré de la reproduction des dessins de Piccolpasso, 41 planches. En 1548, Piccolpasso (1524-1579) écrit Li Tre Libri dell'Arte del Vasaio (« Les Trois Livres de l'art du potier »), véritable mine d'informations concernant les techniques de la majolique, les pratiques d'atelier, le choix des argiles et leur affinage, la mise en forme du corps, la composition des émaux, la préparation des couleurs. Le traité a été rédigé à la demande du cardinal François de Tournon. Le manuscrit original se trouve à la bibliothèque du Victoria and Albert Museum de Londres. Les trois livres de l'art du potier traite de poterie et d'alchimie. Le premier livre concerne les émaux en terre et en métal, ainsi que les argiles utilisés pour la poterie. La relation entre poterie et alchimie est évidente tant sur le plan symbolique que sur le plan opératif. Le second livre est essentiellement consacré à la fabrication des couleurs. Dans le troisième livre traitant du feu, l'auteur explique que le feu doit être confectionné en tenant compte de la Lune et de ses différents quartiers. En cela réside tout l'art du feu qui tient compte de la lumière odique, car les semblables travaillent avec les semblables. L'ouvrage révèle aussi les tours de main sans lesquels l'alchimiste ne peut conduire l'opération sur la voie sèche.Claudius Popelin (1825-1892, qui publia par ailleurs une très belle édition du "Songe de Poliphile"), fut le premier traducteur de cet ouvrage rédigé en 1548, l'un des premiers traités de technique céramique, révélant les secrets des maîtres de la majolique. Contemporain de Bernard Palissy, Piccolpasso cherchera en vain à faire imprimer son ouvrage qui restera oublié pendant trois siècles.Cet ouvrage a servi de référence à Fulcanelli, notamment pour Le Mystère des Cathédrales (cf page 206) puis à son disciple Eugène Canseliet autour de la symbolique alchimique et hermétique. Ce dernier rapproche le prénom de Piccolpassi, Cypriano, au surnom de Cypris (Cyprian), épouse de Vulcain (Fulcanelli). De même pour le nomen Cavalier qu'il traduisit par celui de Cabalier. Il précise également dans son Alchimie (Pauvert, 1964) : "L'iconographie symbolique a souvent figuré le sujet minéral des sages, dans son état primordial et tel qu'il est extrait de son gîte minier, par le rocher aride qui supporte et nourrit un arbre vigoureux et surchargé de fruits. C'est ce motif qu'on remarque, surmonté des mots latins «sic in sterili » ainsi dans le stérile sur la pénultième page du très curieux « art du potier », de Cyprian Piccolpassi." Livres.
