This edition features accompanying words by Rebecca West and t…he Surrealist writer and poet Michel Leiris.In September 1954, Tériade published a double issue of Verve dedicated to Picasso and illustrating one hundred and eighty drawings by the master, the present work included, which were drawn in Vallauris that winter between 28 November 1953 and 3 February 1954. The rich publication reproduced each work in the exact size and chronological order of the original drawings, so as to preserve the integrity of the suite. Tériade remarked that this collection of drawings was Picasso's "finest, boldest, [and] most poignantly human of all he has produced in the course of his long and brilliant career" (E. Tériade, ed., op. cit., n.p.).At the time Picasso began this series in November 1953, Françoise Gilot had just deserted him, taking their two children with her and leaving him alone as an abandoned man. Deeply hurt, he shut himself away in his vacant villa in Vallauris and frantically produced the 180 drawings which represent ". the diary, not verbal but visual, of a detestable 'season in hell,' a crisis in his personal life which led him to question everything." (ibid.).These works address the central theme of the painter and his model, of a man and a woman, of the subject and the object, handled in a style which is burlesque, comic, grotesque, even caricatured. Some ironically incorporate subjects linked to the world of the circus, the monkey, the acrobat, the clown.The year of this publication, 1954, marked the death of Picasso's artistic rival but great friend Henri Matisse and his passing considerably affected Picasso, who in some way relied on their competition as a catalyst. With this new absence of living rivalry, Picasso was inspired to interact with the artists of the past more than ever, continuously holding conversation with historical masters through his own new, bold interpretations.

Printed by Mourlot, Paris, this complete set of Picasso's 8 portraits of French novelist and playwright, Honoré de Balzac, is accompanied by text by French surealist writer Michel Leiris. In 1927, Picasso was commissioned by publisher Ambroise Vollard to do a ser…ies of illustrations for Balzac's novella Le Chef-d'uvre inconnu (The Unknown Masterpiece). First published in 1831 in the newspaper L'Artiste under the title Maître Frenhofer (Master Frenhofer), the story tells of an obsessive painter who has toiled over his magnum opus for ten years. When he finally unveils the finished work, his fellow artists fail to be impressed and Frenhofer, driven mad by his masterpiece, burns the artwork and kills himself later that night. Frenhofer's plight clearly resonated with artists. Cezanne supposedly once lamented, "Frenhofer, c'est moi!" However, Picasso's obsession with the tale went one step further. He even claimed that he was being haunted by the ghost of Balzac and, in 1937, chose the address believed to have been the setting of the opening scene of Le Chef-d'uvre inconnu to be his new studio. Ironically, it was there that Picasso produced what is widely regarded to be his own chef-d'uvre, Guernica. These eight portraits of Balzac, created in 1952 and published five years later, are testimony to Picasso's enduring obsession and deep admiration for the writer. 8 transfer lithographs on Velin d'Arches. Loose as issued in original beige cloth portfolio with ties and black lettering to spine. Some gentle toning and minor foxing to a few leaves, mainly confined to the edges. Overall, the prints are clean and bright, in a very good portfolio.
