Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Napoleon Bonaparte's ambitious adventure in North Africa and the Middle EastThe expedition to Egypt led by Bonaparte was notionally intended to disrupt British- Indian trade routes and found a French colony in the Middle East. The principal contents of this Leonaur edition have been drawn from the two- volume work, 'A History of the Egyptian Revolution', by Paton, which is notable not only as a relatively unknown, though excellent, appraisal of the events of the campaign, but by the unusual inclusion of eyewitness contributions from representatives of all the combatants. The French landed in Alexandria before marching to Cairo, defeating the ruling Mamelukes at the Battle of the Pyramids and penetrating far into Upper Egypt. However, Nelson's destruction of the French fleet at the Battle of the Nile succeeded in isolating the French force. To counter an Ottoman counter-offensive, Napoleon then marched into Palestine and Syria, but was defeated before Acre as his grand and romantic scheme began to unravel. Having retreated and realising his position was untenable, Napoleon abandoned his army and returned to France. The new commander in Egypt, Kléber was assassinated and following the landings of both British and Ottoman armies, the French remnants were compelled to surrender. The second piece in this book, drawn from Phipps' magnum opus, focusses on the French Army of the Orient with particular attention given to the careers of its officers.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
