Publisher's burgundy cloth, gilt ship motif stamped to upper board, gilt titles to spine. Internally bright and clean, endpapers toned. Small ownership stamp and inked date (1933) to pastedown. Spine gently sunned. Some minor edgewear. Near fine. All you need to know about the first American colony - from its pre-settled geography to the first communities, industry expansion, and of course, the witch hysteria of the late 1600s. A rigourous look at practically every aspect of Salem living.

Phillips was a conservation-oriented independent public servant, and to this end he spent his life traveling, observing, collecting specimens, and collaborating with both individuals and institutions according to purpose. He was also a founder and the first chairman of the American Committee for International Wild Life. Phillips' over two hundred publications reflect wide-ranging interests in animal breeding, sport hunting, ornithology, international wildlife conservation, and the like; his most successful was undoubtedly this four-part monograph. He was also a notable philanthropist who not only donated a number of his collections of specimens and artifacts to various institutions, but gave away several large tracts of land to support nature reserve development. Phillips writes to ask whether he could visit Croydon again and, if so, he will send a few programmes of different kind and let the correspondent "select that which you think best suited to your people", asking whether the Hall is available and on what terms.
