This is an influential early treatise on plastic surgery by Philippe-Frédéric Blandin, an important pioneer of autoplasty. While not the first European work to deal with plastic surgery - some works on specific procedures such as rhinoplasty had been published before - this was "the first treatise on plastic surgery in general", per GM 5743.1. 'Of these 84 autoplasties there were 39 cases of rhinoplasty, seven of blepharoplasty, fourteen of cheiloplasty, nine of genioplasty, one of uranoplasty, three of bronchosplasty, two of cytosplasty, four of urethroplasty and five different skin autoplasties. The youngest patient was six and the oldest 67 years. Twelve had faulty adhesions from old ulcers on burns, three had congenital malformations, nine had gangrene, fifteen were operated on shortly before for cancer, nine had fistulas and the remaining 36 were mutilated by wounds or eczema, scrofula or syphilis. Five of these patients died of accidents, the occasional cause of which was the operation. Complications occurred post-operatively in 24 patients: in nine there was gangrene of the flap, the three the parts did not unite, 27 were afflicted by an erysipeloid inflammation and seven suffered nervous affections of a greater or lesser intensity. In 61 of 84 patients the healing was satisfactory. Consequently, according this review, which is naturally incomplete, three out of four patients were healed by the autoplasty, one of 17 was lost, accidents occurred in half and gangrene of the flap as observed in one of nine cases'."
