Original wrappers. Original edition, not a reprint. Good copy, very good internally, wrappers soiled, front wrapper attached but with a bit of play, spine chipped, missing about two inches of the paper facing at the top and an inch or two jaggedly at the bottom, back wrapper with a chip in the upper inside corner. Signatures bound with cords (rather than perfect-bound), so volume is intact despite the chipping. Introduction notes: "A very few copies of this Special Edition have been printed" with a second volume to follow when completed. Elaborately and beautifully designed and lavishly printed with a variety of colors and touches of gold ink used for the headpieces, tailpieces, and large initials. This scheme is especially eye-catching in the last page of the catalogue; all the X, Y, and Z items fit on that one page, and a different color is used for each letter. Black letter titles were set in black letter. There are no illustrations with the slight exception of the printer's device. An exceptional piece of American color printing. Vol. 1 only of two, alas.

In den WarenkorbSm.4to, (216x160mm), 288; 290p. Together with the title to each individual part, copies of the prospectus to the serial present in parts 1-4 and the general title and contents leaves to both volumes; a small fragment torn from the tail-fore corner of the title to part 1 which also has a small tear neatly repaired. Contemporary half black roan, gilt lettered on the backstrip, marbled paper sides, armorial bookplate of Henry Lloyd Gibbs. (Ulrich & Kup, Books and printing a select list of periodicals p24.) A rare and not insignificant American bibliophilic journal, printed on India paper by C. A. Alvord for the publisher and published initially from their office at 51 Nassau Street, and later from number 64 and described by Ulrich & Kup as containing 'much of historical interest on collectors and collections.' Copac locates no copies in British academic libraries.

AN IMPORTANT EXAMPLE OF AMERICAN COLOR PRINTING. Two volumes, complete. A remarkable catalogue of a remarkable collection. Odell focused on bibliography, books about books, history of printing and the graphic arts, and fine printing, at a time when few American collectors were interested in these areas. Books in these categories account for well over half of the 2,434 lots. There is also a wide selection of extremely rare books in other areas, especially the occult, including incunables and a few highly important medieval manuscripts. The catalogue itself is notable for two reasons. First, there are the precise, knowledgeable, and extensive descriptions, with numerous references to specialized bibliographies: most American book catalogues of this period give the barest information about the items at hand. Second, this is certainly the most lavishly-produced American book auction catalogue of the 19th century. It was beautifully printed on fine laid paper, with numerous engraved initials, headpieces, and tailpieces. THIS SET IS THE DELUXE ISSUE, ONE OF VERY FEW COPIES PRINTED PRIMARILY FOR PRIVATE CIRCULATION, with the initials, headpieces, and tailpieces printed in different colors. (Volume II of this deluxe issue is dated 1879, while volume II of the regular issue is dated 1880.) The sets of this deluxe issue that reached the market were sold for $10 each, a colossal price when we consider that lot 1462, a copy of Bodoni's 1818 Manuale Tipografico, sold for $4.50! Title-pages printed in red and black. Facsimiles. 4to. Original wraps. Uncut. Minimal wear to wraps, INTERNALLY FINE AND BRIGHT. Complete sets are extremely rare (volume II is especially scarce). Not in Bigmore & Wyman or Taylor. AN OUTSTANDING ITEM IN OUTSTANDING CONDITION.
