Sammelband containing the first editions of two significant astronomical textbooks: an influential edition of Sacrobosco's De Sphaera with scholia by the Renaissance humanist Ãlie Vinet, supplement by Giovan Pietro Pierio Valeriano, and treatise on climates by Pedro Nuñez; and Caspar Peucer's Elementa Doctrinae de Circulis Coelestibus. Unsophisticated in contemporary vellum. The Tractatus de Sphaera was the most important astronomy textbook of the medieval and early modern period. Composed around 1230 by Johannes de Sacrobosco, a scholar at the University of Paris, it circulated in manuscript for over two centuries, becoming in 1472 one of the first scientific books to be printed. By the early 17th century, right up to the time of Newton, more than two hundred editions had been published. Sacrobosco is here 'mainly concerned with the circles on the sphere â" the equator, the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, the ecliptic, the meridian and horizon. It is often said that the book is a simple version of Ptolemy's Almagest (140 C.E.), but there very little of what we call Ptolemaic astronomy in it â" a single mention of epicycles and deferents, with no indication of how to use them to predict planetary motion' (Ashworth, 'Johannes de Sacrobosco', Linda Hall Library). Of particular importance for the history of science, Sacrobosco argues 'every which way from Sunday that the Earth is a sphere' and his figure for the Earth's circumference, 25,000 miles, comes close to the modern calculation (Ashworth). Caspar Peucer (1525-1602) was a student and son-in-law of Melanchthon who became a leading mathematician, and astronomer at the University of Wittenburg, as well as advisor and physician to the Elector of Saxony. His Elementa Doctrinae was a basic textbook on spherical astronomy that took the geocentric position. It was successful, being republished several times.

Two works bound together in a contemporary dated binding of German alum-tawed pigskin over wooden boards from 1576 with the initials BPM and a large portrait of a German nobleman (likely Prince Palatine Johann Friedrich II of Saxony) on the front board. The panel stamp on the back board is dated 1573 in the plate with the initials T.R. and bears the arms of Wittenberg and the two towers of the Stadtkirche. With twisted brass clasps and catches intact. All edges dyed red. A bit of worming to boards and throughout the second work. Also in the second work, the upper outer corner of leaf E5 renewed, not affecting text. Overall a very good copy of each work in an attractive binding. Caspar Peucer and Sebastianus Theodoricus were both prominent German scholars and mathematicians based at the University of Wittenberg in the 16th century. Together, they were key figures in the Melanchthonian circle, which promoted the study of mathematics, astronomy, and classical education within a Lutheran framework. Peucer was in fact the son-in-law of Philipp Melanchthon. They were active in the Wittenberg academic scene following the work of Erasmus Reinhold, bridging the gap between classical astronomical models and new calculations. The Wittenberg Interpretation refers to the work of astronomers and mathematicians at the University of Wittenberg in response to the heliocentric model of the Solar System proposed by Nicholas Copernicus, in his 1543 book De revolutionibus orbium coelestium. The Wittenberg Interpretation fostered an acceptance of the heliocentric model and had a part in beginning the Scientific Revolution. In 1543, Nicholas Copernicus changed the scientific world by publishing De revolutionibus orbium coelestium. This was the first time that a heliocentric model had seriously been considered, and publicised, and resulted in a slew of opinions on how the universe may work. One such place that these debates existed was the University of Wittenberg which was home to many astronomers, astrologists and mathematicians, such as Erasmus Reinhold, Philip Melanchthon, Caspar Peucer, Georg Rheticus, and Albrecht Hohenzollern. The work of such figures became known as the Wittenberg Interpretation, which historians recognise as important in fostering acceptance for the heliocentric explanation of the universe, and the wider shift of public views over time; and the beginning of the Scientific Revolution. Under the patronage of Philipp Melanchthon, who endorsed the teaching of Copernican techniques despite personal reservations about upending geocentric cosmology, Wittenberg scholars integrated elements of the model into Lutheran academic curricula, prioritizing empirical improvements in ephemerides over ontological commitments. Figures like Caspar Peucer further refined these methods. Peucer mainly cited Copernican quantitative material in order to help explain celestial motions, even though it was different from scripture, and to discuss absolute distances of the sun, moon and earth. He also utilized Copernican data to discuss eclipses and the length of the day. In Peucer's teachings, the findings of Copernicus could not be utilized in extensive arguments because he was considered to be aligned with the theory of Aristarchus.[4] Peucer thought that Copernicanism was offensive and should not be taught in education; however, although Peucer's views did not align with Copernican theory, he still had to teach and advised his students to consider Copernican theory because it was a scientific theory. Second edition in French of Peucer's encyclopaedic work on divination; "it seems to have been the most influential of his numerous writings which were concerned with the varied fields of medicine, astronomy, mathematics, natural history, and psychology", (Thorndike VI p. 493). On the whole the work approves of divination in natural circumstances reading dreams, for instance, or the stars, but agrees with the Bible in condemning certain branches of divination related to demons and witchcraft. Peucer's bias is unflinchingly Protestant, denying the possibility of Miracles, and he attributed the successfulness of relics and invocations of saints to demons rather than divinity." After discussing divination in general, he turns to oracles and theomancy, then to magic, which he thus incorrectly implies is a variety of divination, whereas the opposite is true, then to divination from entrails, to augury and aruspicina, to lot-casting under which he puts geomancy and divining from names and numbers and to dreams and their interpretation. Next he considers medical prognostications, meteorology and weather prediction, physiognomy and chiromancy, astrology, and last prodigies and portents" (Thorndike VI p. 495). He is highly suspicious of Alchemy as a purely devilish art on the one hand, but on the other entirely approving of Astrology, which he himself put to practice and considered essential to the study of medicine. Kasper Peucer (1525 1602) was a prominent physician and scholar who studied with Melanchthon (and married his daughter) at the University of Wittenberg where he was appointed in turn professor of philosophy, mathematics, and medicine. His pupil, John Garcaeus, called Peucer the "most celebrated professor of mathematics in this academy". Peucer's religious views were influenced by his close relationship with Melanchthon, which deviated from the local Lutheranism in its Calvinist colourings, and when Melanchthon died in 1560 Peucer became a prominent religious authority. Although he climbed the academic ranks quickly, and gained appointment as physician to Augustus I, Elector of Saxony, his "Crypto-Calvinist" beliefs were his downfall. In 1574, letters discovered by his patron that expressed a desire to convert Augustus to Calvinism led to a twelve year imprisonment in Königstein Fortress. After his release from prison in 1586, he became physician to the duke of Anhalf, where he remained until his death in 1602. Hozeau & Lancaster II 4860. Leibarzt am kursächs. Hof), Diplomat sowie Schriftsteller. Durch Empfehlung wurde er in das Haus des Wittenberger Reformators Philipp Melanchthon - eine Verbindung, die sein Denken und Handeln zeitlebens grundlegend beeinflussen sollte - aufgenommen. 1550 heiratete Caspar Peucer Melanchthons jüngste Tochter Magdalena. 1553 erhielt er an der Universität Wittenberg die Professur für Mathematik und ein Jahr später für Philosophie. Er verfasste bedeutende Schriften über die Vermessung der Erde (,De dimensione terrae' - 1550) und Grundlagen der Geometrie und der Astronomie (,Elementa doctrinae de circulis coelestibus' - 1551). Peucer war der erste und für lange Zeit der einzige Gelehrte, der sich mit dem zeitgleich entwickelten Weltbild des Nikolaus Copernikus auseinandersetzte. Somewhat browned due to paper quality, and quite prominent stain affecting upper margin throughout, though not really touching text. "Vocabula" without final blank. "Vocabula" with several markings and annotations in brown ink, present in both text and margins, in a contemporary hand, some slightly cropped at outer edge. With the bookplate of Gunnar Brusewitz and two small pieces of paper with his annotations laid in. VD16 ZV 4820 and VD16 W 3736. The "Vocabula" was first published in 1544 and went through numerous editions in the following decades. According to VD16, this is the 11th. The second part of "Leges" containing the "Artickel" has its own title page, signature marks, and impressum. An appealing sammelband, undoubtly prepared for the use of a student. The "Vocabula" is a dictionary of i.a. coins and measures, edited by Paul Eber (1511-1569) and Caspar Peucer (1525-1602), which draws upon the works of Guillaume Budé, Joachim Camerarius, and Philipp Melanchthon. The following scarce tract concern the University of Wittenberg's laws and regulations and set out the standards of behaviour and discipline. Brusewitz apparently put this on his shelf on natural history to consult the names of animals included in the dictionary. One of his annotations concerns the terminology of "elk" in different languages; the other points to the section on birds.

Édition originale française peu commun…e de ce traité des divinations, traduite par Simon Goulard de Senlis. Elle est ornée de la marque de l'imprimeur au titre ainsi que de jolis bandeaux et lettrines gravés sur bois. L'originale a paru en latin en 1553. Kaspar Peucer, savant allemand et gendre de Melanchton, catalogue dans cet ouvrage tous les types de voyance : astrologie, chiromancie, oracles et sibylles de tous genre. Il étudie chacun minutieusement et leur attribue pour la plus grande partie des origines démoniaques. Il admet cependant qu'il existe une certaine sorte de prédictions qui n'est pas dommageable aux chrétiens puisque provenant de Dieu (prophétie). Dans son avis au lecteur, le traducteur précise avoir divisé le livre en plusieurs parties pour le rendre plus facile à manier. Son but est d'aider le lecteur à se tourner vers Dieu et se détourner de Satan en décrivant méthodiquement ces prédictions. Il aborde aussi les superstitions de l'Antiquité, l'astronomie, la médecine, les Écritures Saintes ainsi que la génération des monstres (jumeaux siamois, hermaphrodites.). Cet exemplaire contient un manuscrit d'une page à propos d'Henri de Montfaucon et la magie.
