I am pleased to be able to offer a scarce if not rare, vintage book about the politics of the day in the 1930 s following FDR s New Deal which calls for a return to a Jeffersonian approach to government.State s rights, minimalist impact of the Federal Government, etc. I have not read through it; suffice it to say that I have had enough politics on a contemporary basis to satisfy me. Doubtless, there are students and advocates of the history of political science in this country who will find this scarce book interesting and informative. The book is titled: Jefferson, the Forgotten Man, by Samuel B. Pettengill, Member of Congress, with a foreword by Douglas Johnson (Author of The Assault on the Supreme Court ). Pettengill was a Congressman from Indiana and after his retirement he became known for his writing and speaking in defense of constitutional government and the competitive free enterprise system. This small hard cover book (5 ½ x 8 ¼ inches, 249 pages) was published by something called America s Future, Inc. of New York City, dated 1938. It is bound in royal blue cloth boards with gilt titles on cover and spine. The book has a paste-down presentation label on the front endpaper, where Pettengill has personally autographed the book for someone and furthermore, the inscription certificate is also signed by Frank E. Gannett, the prominent newspaperman of the time. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are generally clean, barely bumped but stained along the gutters with some darkening. I believe this darkening, something also seen on both endpapers, is the result of the acid of the binding glues which have bled through in these places (please see the photos). I can only wonder if all copies of this book have the same issue although I have never seen another copy. The interior pages are not affected and are clean and bright and unmarked throughout. Pettengill was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-second and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1931 - January 3, 1939). Pettengill was first elected to represent Indiana's 13th congressional district, which was eliminated as a result of the 1930 Census, at which time Pettengill was redistricted into Indiana's 3rd congressional district. During his time in Congress he served on committees on military affairs, interstate and foreign commerce and helped formulate much influential legislation. He was influential in the enactment of the Connolly Hot Oil Act and the formulation of the Interstate Oil Compact. As a member of the House Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce, Mr. Pettengill helped formulate the Securities Act, the Motor Carriers Act, the Stock Exchange Act, the National Gas Act and other legislation dealing with railroads, commodity exchanges, public utilities, aviation and the Panama Canal. He became widely known because of his activities in the defeat of the Supreme Court Packing Bill and the Reorganization Bill during the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1938 to the Seventy-sixth Congress. He then resumed practicing law. In 1940 he wrote, Smoke Screen to show that the increasing federal controls over every facet of American business had its counterpart in developments in Germany and Italy. Smoke Screen was the best-selling non-fiction book of that year. "This book is written to demonstrate that we are moving toward National Socialism, and that from now on we should move away from it."--Foreword. The author served in Congress. Pettengill was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-second and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1931 January 3, 1939).
