General shelf and handling wear, including light creasing, discolouration and wear to boards, edges and corners, and tanning and foxing to pageblock, this leading into pastedowns, endpapers and occasionally throughout. Several hinge breaks noted and leaves 21-34 are detached, but present in their appropriate place. Unlike the architecture and furniture of the period, most of the ships and boats built between 1650 abnd 1850 have disappeared. Only two of the barges illustrated in this book have been preserved, both of them Royal barges and both small enough to be kept out of the water and under cover when not in use. The others - all examples of the great civic barges - are known to us only through models, drawings and descriptions. Blue cloth boards, gilt titles. Colour plates. 45 pages.
