Bellissima lettera nella quale il regista si dilunga a parlare del film «L'assassino» che rappresentò il suo esordio cinematografico e uscì proprio in quell'anno. «. Tutto consiste, ora, per me, nel terribile "mantenere le promesse". L'acc…oglienza che ho trovato al mio primo film mi spinge a fare meglio, ma i bersagli seri sono veramente difficili da raggiungere. Questo è un periodo in cui tutto è destinato ad invecchiare rapidamente, e non solo le luci delle automobili e le decorazioni dei grandi caffè. Le idee ingialliscono prima di essere realizzate: bisognerebbe avere la possibilità di realizzarle nell'attimo stesso in cui vengono. Non so, dunque, se al secondo film farò di nuovo centro: e metto già le mani avanti. nel prepararla a qualche eventuale delusione.».

Bella lunga lettera indirizzata a «Caro Angelo [Solmi]». «[.] sono stato diverso tempo a Parigi per preparare la versione francese di 'Un tranquillo posto di campagna', ed ho letto, quindi, con ritardo la tua recensione. | Come ringraziarti della tua generosità? Quasi tutti i c…ritici rifiutano con una dose di superbia superiore persino alla superbia degli autori quella funzione di mediazione tra opera e pubblico che renderebbe rende, nel tuo caso organico il discorso. In generale essi si sovrappongono all'opera, dettano principi estetico-autoritari, discettano senza aver avuto il tempo di analizzare, e le recensioni prendono l'aria di editti [.] in privato, ho avuto i giudiz che più somigliano al tuo, per l'intelligenza, ma anche per l'entusiasmo: da scrittori come Calvino e Flaiano, da pittori come Fabrizio Clerici e Vespignani, da registi come Visconti, Rosi, Lelouch». La lettera prosegue parlando di una comune conscenza, «Carla», bisognosa d'aiuto e sostegno 'psicologico'. Un piccolissimo strappo (2 mm) ben lontano dal testo al margine destro della carta, in corrispondenza della piegatura; fori di classificatore al margine sinistro; nel complesso ottimo stato di conservazione. La lettera proviene dall'archivio privato del critico cinematografico di «Oggi», Angelo Solmi, e reca presumibilmente di suo pugno l'indicazione manoscritta all'angolino alto di destra: «Petri». in 4° (280 x 220 mm), 1 carta gialla, scritta in bella grafia al recto e al verso.
